9 straight months of 200,000+ NEW JOBS added to the U.S. economy!!! Also, the unemployment rate has now dropped to a very low 5.8%.
Great news for all of us seeking better jobs outside of Mother Merck!

This was reported 11/7, and the hourly wage increase was very minimal. Yes, there are jobs out there, but how many qualify as underemployment?

Don't be fooled. Those are mostly low pay part time jobs with no benefits. Unemployment has dropped because unemployment benefits only last 6 months after that if u have not landed a job u are still unemployed but not counted. Millions are still looking for work after the 6 months are up.

Then why is the media constantly reporting that the job market is going gangbusters and there is a shortage of workers to fill jobs in some areas of the country?

Because the media are spin doctors. Do you really believe what they write is anything close to the truth? Your CEO is a spin doctor.

And I agree that the those off unemployment are no longer counted.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you are just being sarcastic. If not you truly are a moron and desperately need to reevaluate where you get your information from

I double checked the facts on the U.S. Dept. of Labor website. This is factual and correct.

That may be somewhat true regarding the US as a whole, but u better hang on to your job in NJ. U will need more than 6 Months to land another one. And if u do it will probably be a temp job with no benefits . That seems to be the new norm in Nj

You forgot to mention some other facts.....about the the millions who have given up! They cannot find work and yep they are often highly qualified....No longer eligible for unemployment benefits and these millions are not being figured into unemployment statistics. Yep, much higher percent of unemployed and underemployed..... Some people think real number is over 20%!

Another issue in new job creation is that part time jobs are the majority of jobs created. These jobs don't pay well. Many folks are working two or more part time jobs to make up for their lost full time job. So yes many jobs are being created but they are substandard. Individuals in these jobs want to be working in decent full-time positions.

    1) Technically, the OP is correct. Unemployment is indeed at 5.8%. So no need to insult and call names.
You just need to politely point out to the OP that the 5.8% tells a very limited story. The MORE important number is what is known as the "Labor Force Participation Rate". This tells us what percent of able-bodied adults are actually working, and what remaining percent are still out of work and not counted in the 5.8%. The 5.8% only counts those that are receiving unemployment checks, which is a limited 6-month time frame.

The current Labor Force Participation Rate is 62.7%. Meaning 37.3% eligible adults are OUT OF WORK. This includes that big chunk of the population that have simply given up looking. A very sobering statistic.

    2) On the bright side, freeing yourself from the twisted hell-hole known as Merck is such a spiritual blessing, that you will not mind being one of these labor statistics for a while :). Even if it means eventually taking a pay cut. You will feel like a human being.

I am free. Got screwed out of my retirement benefits. Now working but in a totally crap contract job until I can find something better. The market is flooded and they like experience but not experience that requires a good paycheck and benefits.

There is to be a dichotomy with what is being reported and what the experiences are from the labor force.

The dichotomy is the illusionary tale being painted by our government officials and the real deal about the job market....aka they are pulling the wool over our eyes. Millions have given up their search, run out of benefits and unemployment and trying to reinvent themselves.

Everyone looking for a good job is hitting up against problems. No new jobs and few good paychecks. Youth rocks. Low paychecks rock. Special hire groups rock.

Ask the DMs if they have an easy time finding a new gig. Ask reps over age 50. You are in for some tales of woe. Rock stars, VP Clubbers, Presidents Clubbers finding zilch, nada.....yep, a long and unpalatable dry spell.

What is really sad is that most of the laidoff successful reps suffer in silence. Too ashamed and embarrassed to share their struggles in the job market.

Painting a false picture of the reality is the worse thing you can do for anyone. You set people up with false expectations and hard hitting disappointments. Its better to know the reality; it takes time to find a job and one you want. This dispels any silly embarrassment. As for the shame, it has no place in the scenario. Everyone knows the successfulness of the rep job is most often achieved through special reservation. For some, a bump in the road is ignored and forgotten even when the bumps are continual and year after year....for others, one bump will get you tossed off the road.
