Default Dumbest DM Coaching Tactics

I`ll go first. Mine told me I should not start any presentation until I have asked a minimum of 3 probes to the doc. I guess I won`t be making calls anymore.

I like this subject!!

My DM told me that I could not sell the product until I had connected with the doc with a personal story first...then tie into and bridge into a sales presentation. I did it just to make him happy and felt like a total fool. I sounded like one of those robot telemarketers reading a script. I laughed to myself when he praised the sales call. I don't believe in cookbook selling.

Mine had me watch Charles Charles on You Tube to get some good pointers. He said on his next field ride that he wants me to go coast to coast.

Mine could not sell water in the dessert, but thinks he is an expert on closing (not). I think I am goinig to slap him the next time he jumps in on my call and asks the doc, "how many patients do you think you can give us during the next week?" My docs think that he is a moron and I do too!

My DM once asked if I had earned my $450.00 on a call (what we are paid as a ratio to calls during the day). I asked her if she had earned her $750.00 for the call.

You're overreacting. Simple shit.

1. How's your day going?
2. Isn't that the same tie you were wearing when I called on you two days ago?
3. Is your dog still peeing on the bonsai tree your wife bought you for Christmas?

and then impress your boss by asking a fourth question
4. Wanna hear about my shit?

You will love this one. And it will affect everyone with the company.

My boss has lied to me for one whole year saying "the company will not downsize and they need you in your territory. nothing at all to worry about".

Found out the company is downsizing the pc reps by 50 - 75% depending on your city. ONly 6 reps per big city. In some of those there are 30 reps.

On field days, my manager says all good stuff to me for feedback during the day, but when I get the field contact on email a couple weeks later, it's the total opposite. When I write a response back, it just never gets looked at again. I think she must be schizo or something.

You can put in the rep notes after the field visit....."we did NOT talk about this when you were here. In fact, your verbal review of me was very positive. These comments are a surprise." Document specifics if you can.

The manager cannot change or delete your notes. (My guess is they don't even read them).

I'm not guaranteeing anything, but if you write this and your counterparts also write similar, this manager will get himself in a bind. The more that piles up will make your life easier, or at least the manager's harder. Trust me, it's worth the effort.

Important: print out your report after you write in these comments and keep a file. These reports disappear at the end of the year.

How do you do that? I thought we were only able to cookbook outcomes in the post-call notes? How the heck can you be expected to do so and how do you enumerate on these calls? Illegal by our company was what I thought was the reason we check off what most closely matches what we did or said.

This company needs a swift kick in the you know what. Our jobs are difficult as it is.

I have since left Sanofi, but my FAVORITE DM stupid request was when he asked me to put a mini tape recorder in my jacket pocket to tape every call that I did so we could listen to them on the next field ride we had. How about my manager just rides along with me all day every day instead?

I've got my DM with me today and tomorrow. I absolutely hate these days, acting fake in front of the customer and then going back and apologizing afterwards for my idiot DM. She finds something wrong in every call and never documents anything good. I usually go through a whole bottle of tums before, during, and after these days, and I think my DM actually believes she's helping me out. By the way, trip winner in '06 and jewelry winner in '07.

I would call ahead to some docs and tell them to give the boss some sh!t when you bring him by. The new pharma guidelines in `09 usually works. Tell your docs that your DM is a big supporter of the new guidelines and you are not. I am sure you have a tough outspoken doc that would be willing to help you out.

Merely showing up. If a DM rides with reps for 200 days per year, that is like having a rep out of the field for 200 days as the entire day is a waste of time and often counterproductive.

Actually, the number might be closer to 400 as the next day is spent retracing your steps for damage control.

Leading to the question from compliance that according to regulations, if this is happening you are required to notify the company.

Then you are fucked - failure to notify or admit that the entry was total bullshit and you were just fucking with your DM by falsely entering information.

I think I will continue to take them on a milk run - seems safer.

Here, "let's do this"...

Tell your DSM you'd like to tape a coaching session for your future reference (you're getting the DSM's consent to record them here).

Make sure you get them to tell you to record conversations with your customers - WHICH IS ILLEGAL TO DO WITHOUT THE CUSTOMER/INDIVIDUAL'S CONSENT.

Use your imagination afterwards.

Use the words "intimidation" and/or "feared retaliation". You will win every time. This from an attorney. All true, believe me.

My DM is sooooooo dumb. When he starts with his crappy advice on ride alongs, I let him know that telling me does not get it. I need you to show me on the next call what you are telling me to do in the car. I laugh me ass when he fumbles all over the place. This usually shuts him up and gets him to chill.

A very insecure mgr reacted to this same request: "Your doctors know you, and I wouldn't be able to do the presentation because I don't have the buy-in that you do.My job isn't to show you how to do it, just tell you what you aren't doing. " He was one of the worst managers, and he never, ever followed up with a field report except if he wanted to nail someone. How did this person ever get promoted?

I had a feisty older female doctor who would shut me up whenever I brought in one of my ever-changing managers. She would say, "I can hear from you anytime. I want to hear from your manager this time." Beads of perspiration would appear on the manager as she grilled him. I, of course would deny ANY knowledge that she was about to do that. Try setting up something in advance with a doctor you know well, and will go along with it. It used to make my day.

Mine lies to me and tells me there won't be any job cuts and half of us have been freaking out about being unemployed. I have only been here 1 1/2 years---although in the business for 14 years. So , that means I will get 3 weeks of pay. Great. Not even enough to pay one house note. It will take me that long to get my house ready to put on the market. and get my resume updated. Love this manager of mine. My manager is screwing me over and probably laughing about it.

Dude, if 3 weeks salary would not cover your house note for one month, you were dead in the water before you took this position.

Make him aware he is being laughed at, and let him know it isn't good manners to be disruptive around a bunch of people who feel like shit

My manager does the same! My mid year was nothing but lies! She stated things that she never addressed with me verbally! I know she is trying to get rid of me. My numbers are o-k. I'm middle of the pack but I do work hard meet CPA, etc. I can't write a rebutal to the mid-year so what do I do? I'm really afraid considering everything going on! If I get to keep my position a new manager would have the wrong impression of me. Worse yet, this may cause me to lose my job. Any advise????

Time to go out on medical leave while you enter the job market. Take advanage of it. All you need is a simple note from your doc. It can be anything from stress, family matters, depression, bad back, bad knee, etc. Good Luck!

One now retired DM wanted me to role play while I was driving; I wouldn't do it.
One DM with Hoechst Roussel encouraged us to make hospital calls at 2-3 AM to talk with the nurses about pneumonia and Claforan. I passed on that one as well.

Okay, my manager is on a new kick for us to use "creative" selling technics............ ie: a bunch of stupid shit a monkey wouldn't even do! You know the 'ole jar of red M&M's with a few green ones mixed in to visually show a percent, etc. I think I am going to just quit and go get a job with UPS or FedX.............. we have all become delivery people!

How do mgrs get away with things like lies on mid years, asking reps to make up detail pieces, etc. i know dm who was reported for "homemade bread" and the rd did nothing about it. And yes this was called in to the compliance hot line!
I feel dm's have too much control over what they have to say about their reps on mid years, etc. They either like or dislike you and can pretty much make up what they want.
