T-R-A is a B-U-S-T
MRK looked at the blinded data and saw no difference between study drug groups and is now back peddling on their offer for SPG. If you thought E-N-H-A-N-C-E was a scam wait until this story breaks.

This looks to be a spoof -- of the Peter Loftus Dow Jones story. It seems an attempt at satire -- probably authored by one of the defense counsels in the securities class actions.
Just a hunch.

Actually 22,000 patients are enrolled -- at over 1,000 sites in 30 countries. Due to be complete in August 2010. Also, a look WAS taken at the "blinded" data recently -- and the study size INCREASED, this per Schering-Plough's own documents:
". . . .We have a global Phase III development program for TRA that includes two studies: TRA for Secondary Prevention (TRA•2P TIMI 50) and TRA for Clinical Events Reduction (TRA•CER). These trials are designed to show whether adding TRA to standard therapy will reduce cardiovascular events such as cardiovascular death, heart attacks, strokes and the need for urgent coronary revascularization. . . .
. . . .Currently, there are more than 22,000 patients enrolled at over 1,000 sites in over 30 countries between both trials. The Executive Committee of the TRA•2P TIMI 50 trial recently increased the target sample size of the trial from 19,500 patients to approximately 25,000 patients based on blinded aggregated clinical event rates. . . .
. . . .we do not expect the increase in patient enrollment in the TRA•2P TIMI 50 study to impact the estimated completion of the trial in September 2010. The estimated completion date is based on the accrual of the necessary number of patients with clinical events, as well as a minimum of one year patient follow-up. . . ."
That is from a May 27, 2009 "Investor FAQ" published by Kenilworth, but no longer listed in the indices, at the Schering-Plough corporate website. It is still "there", though -- and I can show it to you, if you know the link name. See my blog: search the date of May 28, 2009; or search the term "FAQ".

That part of yours is actually possible -- plausible, even.
ON THE OTHER HAND, the idea of Merck "backing out" of the merger, or "renegotiating" it, based on any future disappointing TRA study outcomes -- is less than plausible. Considerably so. It is barely within the realm of "possible" -- given how tightly these two are locked up -- in their reverse merger agreement -- specifically to prevent such "renegotiations"/competing offers.
Now, the board of directors of Merck could always say it has a fiduciary duty to renegotiate, if/when it becomse painfully clear that Merck is "grossly-overpaying" for Schering-Plough.
This is aclled a "fiduciary out". It almost never occurs in deals of this size, where not one, not two but three investment banking firms have offered opinions -- in writing -- that the deal is "fair, from a financial point of view."
Just my take. But it should be yours, too.

The only reason one would increase a sample size by thousands of patients is because the study is on its way to FAILURE! No difference between study groups. Merck will back out of this deal.
