News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
People,
Just sat down with our regional today.... there is more crap to hit the fan.
There will be major cuts in our specialty sales teams.
Pscy - Goodbye to 50% of them.... Wyeth has 2-6 overlapping already... We do not need these #'s selling 2 drugs
INF - Again Wyeth has 2-4 overlapping with us... This will be cut.
Rhuem - Celebrex reps... get ready! They want to keep the Wyeth people because they have a drug with Amgen that is Medicare 'B' and is buy and bill... Currently we do not know how to do this with our sales reps and their reps have relationships already with the Rhuem's.
DM's - Well you already heard the news - It's about 50% folks !!!
Hate to spread the news... the good part is the severance package was extended... the bad.... 10-20,000 reps will be laid off in the next 2-3 months.
Sorry again
A VERY disappointed DM.

How will they decide who stays/goes? Will a certain percentage of Pfizer specialty reps have to go? A mix between the two companies? Some other formula?

Take it from a multiple award-winning rep who was severed: there is no "magic formula" used to decide who stays or who goes. Multiple VPC winner? Gone as much as anyone else. Employee riding the coattails of his/her partners over the years? Gone (on second thought, probably retained). Kiss-ass with your RM/DM? Adios... sorry, everyone can't stay.
You'll look back and say, "Hmmm, I gave 12 years of my life to this company, 80% of which were deemed 'success' from the number of VPC trips I earned, and this is the thanks I get?"
You'll tell it to your friends, your family and anyone else who will lend an ear, and they'll care -for a few weeks; then their thoughts of you will vanish into thin air as they contemplate the same or similar things happening to them in this dreadful economy.
Start looking for other employment yesterday. You will be glad you did. It took me 3 months to find employment in the same industry and I had to move my family (same state). Luckily, my new company realizes the talent I will be bringing to their company.
I'm a (somewhat) anonymous voice, but trust me, it can happen to you. No matter the awards or recognition you have. The sad thing about it is that you have zero recourse (lest you lose the fat severance). Pay off small loans/debt first, down, down, downsize then put the rest into a CD and plan on squeezing out every last penny until employment arrives. And apply for unemployment - you pay into it so take back some of what you deposited.
Best of luck to you - you're going to need it.

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
Poster #3 IS DEAD-ON CORRECT....... The reduction was completely random and without structure....Because random and lack of structure can not be construed as a discriminitory act... PFE cut the good, the bad and the ugly PERIOD......
As for #3s advice... Take it.... It took me 4 months to get a job in the same industry and the same city (needed to stay for various reasons).... Take advantage of unemployment....It's is about $400 per week and every little bit will help since your main goal is to hang on to the severance money and invest it.... You're not going to go buy a new Mercedes, right???
Best of luck to all of you.......

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
Yahooooo !!! severed rep here---glad to see those "smug" reps get their severance notice this time. Just to add to your insecurity, the economy SUCKS right now!!! No body is really hiring, and if they are expect nearly 2,000 other applicants to apply for the same job. So you must stand out some how---for the ladies--time to invest in a boob job. White males--no chance !!!!!!
You will enjoy hanging out in the unemployment line!!!!

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
Here's the magic formula:
1) you are responsible for making cuts
2) turn on your computer
3) open up a blank Excel spreadsheet.
4) set up the spreadsheet to make the calculations you need
5) your boss has told you what the numbers should add up to.
5) start plugging in names and compensation
6) add it all up
7) keep adding and subtracting names and numbers until you come out with your pre-determined total.
8) hit file/save
I know. This is how I've been told to do it in the past.

Number 6 is right. Use a random number generating software program to pick the victims. You may need to tweak the results but you can use another random number program to do that. It's absolutely lawyer-proof. Any statistical consulting group can do it for you, no muss, no fuss.

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
Here is what you should do.
1.You'll be told to stay focused. Please do, but focus on getting a new career.
2.Do not take vacation, you'll need all the severance you can muster and if you can add a few weeks of pay on the back end it is worth it.
3.Work the bare minimum. Do not bust your hump when you got a 50/50 chance of makeing the cut. Your "spare" time will be better served investigating other opportunities and/or taking classes to get out of all jobs medical.
4.Stay up on your personal doctors visits. You have the best health plan in the world take advantage of it. Get those funny moles removed, go to the dentist, stock pile on those allergy meds or anything else you may need for the next year or two.
5. Save up and tell your spouse to make any financial cuts you can. The job market is tough and you'll have to plan for a 6-12 months to get another job. If you are fortunate to land another job before that than consider your severance a farewell bonus. You don't want to dip into it if you can help it.
6. Mentally prepare for it. It is beyond stressful not knowing and hoping you'll keep your job. Last time I excepted the fact that it was out of my control and that yes it was probably going to be me (I had taken a promotion to a rural area) and I was ready for the phone call because I was expecting the worse and had taken the above precautions.
7. When you do get cut do not take it personally. I wondered why that new rep in my district was one of the few that didn't get cut but in all honesty it wasn't her fault she was kept. It was just the way the regional manager could make cuts to get to the right number for themselves.
Good luck. Ssorry you have to live through another 6 months of this. Pfizer was once a great company but has seriously lost their way.

Right On!!! This is what HR doesn't want you to know and the ELT doesn't have balls to be upfront about it. I guess it's very hard to come out and say if your compensation is on the high end, you're on the list.

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
good post #14: heed their advice.
get everything in order NOW. start looking NOW. start saving NOW. if you're retained, good for you; if you're let go, at least you'll be one step ahead of everyone else.
i applied for a job against 17 other, very well qualified reps, some of whom were specialty reps for several years. i was told i was chosen b/c of my clinical expertise in the area of the medications i will be promoting, as well as a familiarity with the geographic area in question. my sales success was somewhat sub-par compared to what the other candidates brought to the table... i didn't win many award trips but my performance was above-average for most of my time with pfizer.
i say this just to let everyone know that just because you're a multiple award winner, you won't necessarily land a job right off the bat, especially in this market. it is tough and only going to get tougher as the months progress.

Guys... the Jan cuts were the primary care side.... Right... the specialty side except for HIV were not touched and Pscy actually went through an expansion. I am a Pscy DM and it does not look good. Wyeth wants some protection for there reps and we do need to keep some of their talent... just as we did last year, the Wyeth managers have forced ranked there reps... I hate to tell you guys... this had happened her also. Just has not been shared.
The primary care teams may be cut from 3 reps per LAT to 2 reps.... 3 are not needed. As for Pscy there will be one pfizer and one Wyeth.... so 50% boys and Girls.
And for the numbers, take another 2,000 from us, 2-3,000 from Wyeth. 3-4,000 from Merck/Schering and Glaxo and then Novo.... Guys there are a TON of reps looking for work

The job market sucks. For every job opening there are hundreds of applicants. And if you were on the high earn of the salary scale-quess what? They don't want to take a chance hiring you at a lower salary to have you quit several months down the road when you find something paying more. It Sucks.

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
You all need to use your heads for something other than coat racks.
If you're offered a job, take it. Does it need to be the same salary? No. Take a 15-20% cut in pay if needed - it's all about security (salary, benefits, bonus, etc.). Hell, if you make a decent bonus, you'll make up the difference in base salary. Plus, in a few years, you'll be making close to what you made earlier. This is what I did. Then again, I don't have many 'wants' in my life... I have a comfortable home, no debt other than the loan on my house and a peaceful feeling knowing that I've done everything right from a financial standpoint in my life.

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
Another factor that may play in the favor of Wyeth reps staying during the merger is that
from what I've heard, they are some of the lowest paid reps in the industry, so they would be cheaper for the bottom line.
Also, as far as the Medicaid B buy and bill experience with Enbrel, this may be significant because Amgen is hiring for their new osteo drug and there has been lot of discussion about candidates faring better if they have Medicaid B experience for the positions.
One bit of advice for the upcoming changes: Don't stress out trying to prove yourself to be worthy of staying, because in the end it doesn't seem to matter. The logical qualities you'd think they would value for top notch people don't always seem to match who is cut and who is retained. Good luck.

Not bitter at all. I just am realistic about what will happen. Pfizer isn't going to keep a Pfizer rep over a Wyeth rep because Pfizer has respect or concern for their own employee's. Look how the sales force has been treated the last four years. But by all means keep your faith, it's funny to see.

Why are you disappointed?....You need to get your head out of the sand. I left in 2005 and I was promoted above DM. The reason....I saw what is happening today coming. I love selling, and the entire industry has moved away from a sales organization to one that is run by lawyers, human resources, and whistle blowers. Today, if you sell....you get in trouble because you shared a damn clinical (unapproved) of course with a doctor, or you attempted to compare and win. 15 years ago, pfizer was top notch. You were held accountable and rewarded for performance. How can you be an effective leader to your reps when your hands are tied behind your back? How can you lead when if you hold someone accountable, the first reaction is to "open door" you? Most of the great people are gone. I still have some really good friends that are there, but the only way to stay is you have to be happy by complying with stupid guidelines and not driven by performance. Their just going through the motions. Some people can exist doing that, I couldn't.
Here is the future; (my opinion only, but I have been correct so far)
1. Yes there will be many more layoffs. I can see pfizer moving to a smaller contract sales force to trim costs and benefits. In fact, I heard they were testing it now.
2. Performance will continue to be pushed aside until it is a non factor
3. Government and the politicians will continue to demonize and squeeze the industry into more and more concessions....this will put more pressure on the company to cut costs. Let's face it...government won't be happy until Pfizer gives it away.
Good luck....but at least start looking around. There is life (and sales) outside of Pfizer.

You need to do some math on this. When calculating savings..a reps salary is a drop in the bucket compared to what these drugs profit and as such..the savings seen by going with Wyeth reps would be ridiculously small in the scope. For example: Lets assume 3,000 reps costing the co. $250,000 dollars a year each...they would cost the co. 750 million dollars..now lets's assume they saved 50,000 a year by using wyeth reps (no way they would save that much) that would cost 600 million...a savings of 150 million a year. Now Lipitor alone brought in 12.5 BILLION in one year...do you really thing they are concerned about what most likely would not amount to 100-150 million in savings by going with wyeth reps that would have to retrain? Come on...learn the numbers you are dealing with here.

From the transition team here, your missing the point PP. It's not just Wyeth's pay scale but the fact those reps bring in 2.5 times the profit over Pfizer's sales team. Wyeth's sales stategy generates more profit with less man power than the Pfizer's sale model; the icing on the cake is the average Wyeth rep is paid less than the Pfizer representatives. So Pfizer can pay less for a sales person and get more productivity. In business we call that a win win situation and yes we are looking at that; every million counts in this economy and for our future.

Pfizer already has contract reps. Do you mean they will get more contract reps and get rid of us?

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
This just goes to show that you should have done better in school and NOT pursued a BA in Finance. If you wanted to be in healthcare you should have gone for a degree in a healthcare field. If you wanted a job in sales, fast-food and used-car sales are always hiring.

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
Wyeth also has much fewer people on the R&D side for similar work output. I wonder what the transition team thinks of that. Should the Groton folks be worried or will they just take the Wyeth R&D compounds?

Boy you Pfizer people are clueless about biologics. First of all, it's MEDICARE B, not Medicaid B you idiot. Second, Enbrel is not a Part B drug because, although it's an injectable, it's self-administered, not physician administered, so if Medicare would be covering it would be Medicare Part D, genius. Finally, most of Enbrel's business is with people under 65, so for most people it's covered under the pharmacy benefit, just like Celebrex. How in the hell did you people get to be the world's largest pharmaceutical company?
Come October and you dolts "acquire" us we are going to mop the floor with you.

Oh please. Yeah we all believe that someone from the transition team is on cafe pharma typing responses...nice try dipshit. And what the hell are you talking about with Wyeth's sales strategy? They see the same docs, same number of calls per day and have shittier drugs.
You my friend are not correct on any of this.

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
I am so sick of hearing this they are paid less argument. Do your math...rep salary is a drop in the giant bucket for these company's. For one DTC ad campaign they could pay a thousand reps for a year or more. They do not make these decisions based on one company's reps make a few thousand dollars less a year...for Christ sake Lipitor made 12.5 billion dollars last year..they paid the reps salarys in about one day of sales.

Re: News does not look good - MORE LAYOFFS
The negativity on Cafe Pharma is overwhelming. There are plenty of medical, pharmaceutical and other companies hiring. There is competition for the positions, but there always has been. That just means you need to have your resume in order, be prepared for the interview and don't suck. If you live in a small town you might have to move for a job opportunity, but it's not as if no one is hiring.

Wyeth Rep here and I guess I should be looking forward to working at Pfizer if they pay better. I have been with Wyeth for 9 and 1/2 years and I make 89,000.
I thought this was pretty good salary, what are you guys making? How high can you go as a Territory Rep?

i agree. not in 3 years. Not even if they started you at 70k which they dont. 25% increase over 70k is still only $87500. And there is NO WAY your merit increases and salary bump from your promotion add up to more than 25% on top of your starting base. Liar
