This is why they did THIS layoff, you stupid twat! If there gonna go through this, they might as well do it all at once. Save them the money, energy, and resources!

That person is right but for the wrong reasons. They are not doing this is all at once. Its kinda like a volcano its just getting started before the big eruption. if you think you are safe going forward you will rethink this about the middle of next year. They gotta pay for those CSC's. They go to ordering samples on line

It is not a dying industry unless Obama kills it. He and his comrades would like to see that happen.

People need and will continue to need drugs. BI has had some setbacks in getting new indications for old products, but the pipeline is good.

The reason for cuts is not unique to BI. All pharma companies are downsizing their sales forces. The real reason is that the R & F model that drove pharma to hire massive sales forces is and has been obsolete. Your comment might have been more accurate if you had said that giant pharma sales and marketing divisions are dying.

Many good people have and will lose their jobs in pharma because of leadership (Corp. Lemmings) that refused to back away of 70's and 80's reach and frequency models that are obsolete and have no place in the era of managed care medicine. What a shame.

Word is that more cuts will likely occur within the next 10 months. These layoff rumors are rarely wrong. It's a dying career...

Yes, it is true. More layoffs in 2010. Do not rest on your laurels, and think you are safe. BI could have laid off 50% or more today.

Yes, it's true; the above person has no idea what the hell is up. You need to go back and rethink your strategic management course. No company worth it's longevity will base this round of cuts as a means of getting them through 2010 next year. That's f--ing ridiculous. These cuts are to scale back for a few years. I can't say that there will be no cuts in the future, only that there will be no cuts in the NEAR future. Stop trying to get everyone's panties in a bind and go mess with the Merkette's board.

The OP is right in that more layoffs are coming, but you need to wake up dude. OF COURSE more layoffs are coming. It's a sales organization. You're never home free.

Speaking of Merck:

Merck's 2008 layoffs came in two waves. In MAY, the drugmaker cut about 15 percent of its sales positions, or 1,200 jobs. Merck cited the rejection of Cordaptive and lingering Vytorin woes, which contributed to significantly lower sales of the blockbuster drug. In addition, the company says that it completed the launch of eight meds and vaccines since 2006, and needed to scale back the forces for those products.

A second, much bigger wave came in OCTOBER. Following the announcement of a 28 percent drop in Q3 earnings, Merck said it would cut 7,200 jobs--more than 12 percent of its workforce--as part of a broader company-wide restructuring plan. Third-quarter revenue was down 2 percent, partly due to sluggish sales for most of its vaccines, major generic competition for Fosamax and a drop in its cholesterol drug sales of about 15 percent to $1.1 billion.

The job cuts included 6,800 employees and 400 vacant positions in all areas of the company. Forty percent of the cuts are in the U.S. and 25 percent will be senior and mid-level execs. The layoffs are scheduled to be completed by 2011. Merck expects restructuring costs from $1.6 billion to $2 billion through 2010, but hopes to save between $3.8 billion and $4.2 billion by 2013

While I agree that if something else goes wrong, there could be more layoffs, I think this one really is it. Merck laid off twice because they only did 12-15%, while we just did 30%. I think we can calm down - unless something bad happens at the FDA.

I'm still nervous. We did 30% of sales, no mention of cuts company wide yet. If there is a significant chunk cut in the overall BI workforce as part of this roll, I will relax. If not, I can't help being on edge. We have a lot of bloat, and very expensive areas that could be outsourced to cut costs, but haven't been yet. I don't mean sales, I mean R&D.

They weren't involved at all in the layoff. Only PC, Specialty and their DMs and RDs.

you need to update your current events.

R&D got canned a while ago and help desk is all outsourced now.

Plenty of cutbacks in home office. Stick to worrying about what goes on in the field.

If the products were so bad, why did you wait around until you were shown the door? Oh, I get it! You were mumbling to yourself!

So 20 scientists shown the door a year ago and a few dozen at IT outsourced. Is that it? Marketing, HR, training etc.., Surely we won't need as much support staff since they lopped off 30% of the sales force.

Training Department is over staffed. I worked there for 8 years and left for another company in the industry. They could cut 1/2 the staff and be at the right levels.

Layoffs are not the end of the world just don't be so quick to burn bridges; not even one.
Loss of blood from the human body is no big deal but if you fail to treat properly, you could lose more. So preserve what you have even if you think you can live fine without it, him or her.
