AstraZeneca to cut a further 8000 jobs
    by Matthew Dennis
    Last Updated:January 28, 2010 13:51

AstraZeneca announced on Thursday that it is to cut another 8000 jobs across its global operations over the next four years as it targets cost savings of around $1.8 billion. As part of the restructuring, the company said it will reduce the number of “disease area targets” within its core areas, with CEO David Brennan saying that the latest cuts were "not just about cost reduction."

The drugmaker said that some research and development sites may close as part of the reorganisation, with the job cuts to affect functions such as sales and marketing, business infrastructure, research and development, and the supply chain. The company said it was too early to confirm where the latest job cuts would be made, but added that about 3500 jobs will be lost in R&D, although “the net reduction may be around 1800 positions” after the reallocation of roles.

In 2007, the company reported it would undertake job reduction plans, and extended this programme in January 2009 from around 9000 to 15 000 roles by 2013. AstraZeneca has so far eliminated 12 600 positions, and in its latest announcement, extended this timeframe by a year to 2014. A spokeswoman for the drugmaker said the latest job losses would be confirmed in “weeks rather than months.”

The news follows the reporting of AstraZeneca’s fourth-quarter results, where the company forecast “up to a mid single-digit decline” in revenues for 2010. "Let's be clear - 2010 is going to be a challenging year," Brennan commented

Wow, and I sure glad I took the separation package when it was offered. Who knows how the next round will play out.

Don't say you weren't warned. Of course leadership is going to give you the same old song and dance about right sizing and only impacting a small percentage of the sales force. What do you expect them to say, " get the hell out asap." They will try to keep you all calm until June when the next round of layoffs is to occur. Then again in January. Remember the Nazi's didn't round up everyone at the same time. They took one city at a time and the first were those that showed up for deportation voluntarily. Sound familiar. The next round will not be voluntary and the separation package will not be as lucrative. You were warned.

Really? You are going to compare The Nazi's who killed Million's of people during WWII to AZ letting go 10,000 people from their jobs?

You are like school in the summer time, No Class!

Look on the bright side! We had a record qtr., sales are great, and they are cutting loose 10,400 because we did so damn good! Remember, once we get to the upcoming meetings, rainbows will pop out, and we will be focused and not worried about the 10,400 ! Don't worry that we are spending millions on these wonderful meetings! We can pay for them with the savings in salary from all the fired people!

Just stay focused people! They will take care of us all. WOW! Record sales! Aren't we the lucky ones!

..and you thought the last group who got "displaced" were just a bunch of bottom feeders who needed to go anyway? HA! Most of them were older, well paid and for the most part as successful as you. You are all about to get the shaft and the package will not be as good..no insurance or minimal coverage at best, etc. Also. see if those 200 open positions will be filled now! Ah gee...they are frozen now. Get out while you can before the ax comes down...or better yet stay which will leave more jobs for the rest of us! Suckers!

Those 250+ openings for DM's and reps are STILL open, at least that's the impression you get form our website.

Impression is the key word. That is all upper management cares about at AZ: impressions.
None of you are owed a severence package and it is unlikely you will get much in the next round of layoffs.
Research other industries and see what kind of severance is given to salespeople; not much.

I don't think they can go any lower with the severance packages. What they can do, however, is offer you a job in another state or a long drive from where you live. Then they have offered you a position with the company and they don't have to pay you a severance. I hear that happened to MANY people in oncology last year. I should have taken the severance package back in October. I see the writing on the wall and it ain't pretty.
