Default Managers Top 10 Facts

10. They are looking for another job, as you are
9. They would go back to being a rep if they could just get into device sales
8. They can't handle heat from above, so they pass the buck
7. They are screwing off more than you are
6. They get off on the title "manger" but that's all they will ever be and they know it
5 They got promoted by default
4. They hire weak reps because they are afraid strong reps will over power them
3. They don't get the term "manage the manager"
2. They covet LinkedIn
And the #1 Fact about managers:
1. They visit Dominatrix after they've been bitched slapped by their boss, crawl around in a diaper and ask their lady in leather to bitch slap them some more.

I call bullshit. If their numbers are good they have a great gig.
To your points:
10 Everyone looks actively or passively to make themselves better.
9 Device is only the holy grail to those who dont have any device experience. Work is work.
Now there are some who are KEEN to rub elbows with the surgeons or whatever, and if thats your thing go for it. To me the real goal is to make more and work less....although that is obviously not always possible.
8 Handling heat from above when your dealing with stiffs who wont work hard to at least get their territory rolling can be difficult. You are right. A good manager will challenge employees and hold them accountable though. So maybe you are just dealing with a good manager?
7 Screwing off is a relative term. If you mean they meet you at 10 and leave at 3 it might be because they have a long drive to get home and they still have 4 hours of spreadsheets to create to send out to you to force you to focus.
6 I will give you some points here. A lot of folks get hung up on titles. Want to know something funny? You talk to really successful people....regardless of what you call success, they will rarely give a shit about a title. They dont mean notin in the end.
5 Promoted by default? Dont say that. It makes you seem petty and bitter.
4 Weak reps? Yeah, I am sure HA, that they go out seeking weak reps in their interviews. Overpower them? What are you doing with them guy?
3 Manage the manager? No one gets that term except you.
2 Linked in? I dont have anything on that.
1 Ok. So what.

If you speak to ANY talented sales representative, they will ALL tell you that managers are useless.

And, if you don't think so, go ahead and ask them (I am referring to sales people that are good, and have over 20 years of productive numbers).

managers are useless.

Try to keep up with the conversation.

The topic was not if managers are useless or not.

But since you mention it, I have to disagree because the bottom 50% in the district require "Education" or "Disipline up to and including discharge" to motivate.

Either way, that won't happen without a DM.

The Regionals cant be bothered with it...they have sleep to catch up on.

Thusly the invention of the District Manager.

In real sales, a good rep can cuss a manager out for being a dick/bitch and the manager will apologize to the rep.

Why are reps that don't have a track record of being motivated (went to a good school, got good grades, performed well at other job, demonstrate that they know what they are talking about in the interview) being hired then?

That's right...they are hired because they have a friend at the company or because they couldn't possible sell anything else.

As for mangers, if you really think they are needed, then you don't know selling.

Couldn't agree more.

Another reason why I can't wait to get downsized and start over with a new company that approches things this way.

Pharma is for pussies and women with big tits.

Bad hires happen all the time for a variety of reasons.
Im done with you.
I am always wondering what it is like to walk around knowing it all though....
maybe you can help me understand that feeling.
What is it like to know everything....and be a drug rep?

Sorry that you feel that "you are done with me". You sound like the typical state college grad who got into pharma because his football buddy and drinking buddy knew another football player, and you all hired each other.

As for knowing everything, well, I do not. But, I probably know a lot more about the world than you, and probably am more well rounded than you, so kiss my ass.

Later dickhead.
