Amazon Medical had a HUGE booth at Greater NY and I heard that many manufacturers are jumping on board in favor of the traditional dealer model. Schein and Patterson appeared to be shitting their pants. There's even a rumor of a strategic alliance between Patterson and Amazon, given that they lost Sirona and have a wide revenue gap to fill. Comments?
"Comments?" No surprises here. The traditional retail - dealer model is and has been dead for years. It just wouldn't fall down and stay down. A reason it has lasted this long in its' current minimally profitable an inefficient system is because dental is really just a cottage industry - like the a-hole of health care - accounting of a fraction of dollars vs. real medicine and the economies-of-scale and installed infrastructure prevented a new entry into an old, unprofitable sub-segment. Those days are over. Dental dealers - retail order takers and the antiquated delivery chain is as doomed as amalgam. It's only a matter of time. and It's about Time. Waaay past time. tip: short all dental dealer stocks and most small dental mfg. They are not going to make it.
