Great article. 2014: The end of the road for the America drug salesperson. It says what we all know but won't talk about. What we do in our offices doesn't really matter. And will matter even less as Obamacare takes over. Most of us don't get good access but the company will use that only against the employees it's trying to get rid of, like the over 50 crowd. There's no future in this career, especially for middle managers like abms and rbds.
I like that. A lot of us like that. Good luck trying to find a six figure job down the road.

Forget about what it means for the rep. Halfway into the article is the basis for the pending cut to retiree health care. Those that are already retired will be impacted, but more importantly all the 50 somethings that are holding on for that bennie are going to be sorely disappointed

No, because if they've hit their 55 and ten they're grandfathered in. That goes for the 54 year olds too. Any way you look at it, it comes out good for the old reps and bad for the rest of us. My manager says they're already considering ways to streamline the sales force. Offer the older reps big packages to avoid lawsuits. Weed out the bottom reps through PIPs. Put a microscope on HCC violations. Not a good time to be here. Do what my older territory partner is doing. Put all your efforts into finding a new job on the company time. You'll already have a job when the storm hits and the younger reps are swimming in the unemployment swamp.

Don't kid yourself. JnJ us behind the industry trying to eliminate the effective sales rep in favor a group of MSLs who have trouble even conversing with the gate keepers. They will fail, but not before they destroy countless careers and billions in $ stock. New head cheese is onboard with this plan. Good luck and good bye.

I'll take the bennies and pension, please. And a severance plan. And almost 7 figures in my 401k. And my pension. And my stock. And all my options in the 50s and 60s. And the 200k of stock I've accumulated.

Destroy my career at JnJ. It just kickstarts my next career. I can't wait!

Stop with the "my manager say" crap. You're either full of sh*t or your manager is a moron.

And back to the facts. Those currently on the retiree plan will retain the the benefit, but the parameters of the benefits will be changed.

The elimination of reps has been inevitable across the industry. With the onslaught of patients due to ACA, reduction in reimbursements, controls by all the payers, constraints on what reps can say and ability to efficiently get to HCPs through alternative channels it HAD to happen.

HCPs are realizing the value prop of a rep is declining and MSLs or (MSL lite) increasing. And so is JNJ leadership. Take those same $$ (250-300k) for a rep and put it into alternative programming that can be accessed on demand and more efficiently.

These days drug reps are just a waste of money. And the only difference between a pharma rep and a biotech rep (Immunology Specialist? LOL. The only difference is the title.)

Both reps make nothing. Neither develop drugs, work on the distribution or treat patients. Neither bring any value to mankind, our society or even patients. When both are cut the only change is a few overpaid college kids will be moving back in with their parents. Not really a job people. It is more like a spoiled kids club.

Field sales in immunology has lost all confidence in sales management. Leadership is now a thing of the past. M.Y. do you want to save a bunch of money? Fire everyone from directly below you to until you get to the field representative. The only thing these managers do is say " here is your ranking and you are above/below goal. Either way we need more from you while we pay you less". There is no direction or strategy in difficult waters. They are just a bunch of useless staff who were promoted up from the field for kissing the right peoples asses. When was the last time there was a focus group at a rep level to brainstorm the solutions? I don't mean the same 10 reps that always do the same ad boards either. They are all clueless and provide useless intel as you should know by now. So if you want to make this place really work and regain market leadership start by cleaning house of this bloated and ancient management staff along with the favored reps who they always take care of. Look at the calibration meeting to see who is sleeping with who. Either make this place the giant it should be or keep your door closed and let it continue to drop market share. Either way change is coming, with or without action on your part.

One of my colleagues has made P club eight times and they still got 4s from their manager the past few years. If you work hard, make the numbers, lead the franchise, it doesn't matter, unless you are willing to kiss ass.

So enlightening. I have an idea - why don't you try beating your competition or is that also someone else's fault.

Again, the problem is the old, stagnant managers that are horrible at their jobs. They can't get another job anywhere in the industry. They stay here and abuse the people they don't like for a living. These are the ones killing the company. We have already turned over 80%of the sales force with the same results. Actually, the results are even poorer compared to before.

I am so entertained by watching many of the abms make fools of themselves, sucking up to the equally dumb RBDs and senior management, following them around like puppies, laughing at unfunny jokes, it goes on forever. One rep who recently became a manager was telling her peers she couldn't wait to get the job so she could tell people at social functions such as weddings that she was a manager at J & J…that would really make people jealous or impressed. You know what, clueless sister? People don't care. Not even your team. You make manager in this company, you're stuck. Enjoy all that windshield time.
