Back in the day, when I was a hot drug rep

    We were not allowed to "detail" people in the waiting room. Hell, if they asked what we had and what it was used for, and the staff found out, we'd be banned.

    So why is it OK for commercials to basically detail via TV. It's horrendous. Some guy who actually sounds just like I did (except I'm female) when I would speak with a doc.

    It's sickening.

    When I first started (earlier than you) TV detailing was considered unethical and the 'unspoken rule' was honored. Later HMOs and MCOs came along and started growing market share, then they instituted formularies which restricted what could be talked about - so - I was told that our company (Merck at the time) had no choice but to advertise so patients would mention the drugs that us reps couldn't mention in a closed formulary system. Then there was a chance to get them prescribed- prior auths, etc.

    Finally, female reps came along and so did Cialis and Viagra. People saw the ads - their wives would insist they ask their doctor and the manufacturers hired pretty women to talk eye-to-eye about erections. I think the rest is $elf- explanatory. :cool:

    Drug ads are the dumbest idea ever. Used to sell Plavix. The commercials were embarrassing.

    I used to LOVE listening to the Viagra & Cialis girls at displays. Something fascinates male doctors when a female goes over the detail aid illustrations with a Viagra pen and then clicks the button so the writing part pops out and he can sign for samples. Those pens in a hot rep's hand were all they needed. Boing !!! :cool:
