I suppose this is why cerec people are leaving and 50% of the cerec positions nationwide are open? Does any medical company really pay only $65k a year anymore? Talk about a slap in the ass.

    I am currentlty selling toothbrushes.

Do you think this job would be a move up for me ? There is a local opening (what a surprise) it is called an 'ortho' rep, WTF ?

I heard the Patterson employment 'test' is brutal ? - True or False ?

Short responses please. Bullet points preferred.

The test isn't brutal unless your college GPA was a 2.0. And an ortho position is not a cerec position.

The ortho position is a new position that will attempt to sell the cerec ortho machine to orthodontists. New product, new market segment. Unproven. As a former cerec specialist I would say that position is highly risky too many unknowns no history to base your decision on.

Patterson pays significantly less than other dental companies and many times less than medical companies. The territory rep position is foreplac right out of college as first job, then jump into a more lucrative medical device or surgical position. Long term it's not a feasible position the pay is about $50,000 a year with no expense reimbursement and little if my commission.
A cerec position used to be a fairly lucrative position for the amount of work involved but no more. You"ll make $60-65k a year with no expense reimbursement. As all can see Patterson is Amongst, if not the lowest paying dental company not much reason to work there.

Most cerec specialists have two jobs, the position is very interesting and clinical, the pay blows. You can't do it without a second gig.

    True!

I all CEREC and I also work for a contract Pharama company, it is an easy gig at the Pharama.

After 7 years of being a cerec specialist I have l decided to call it quits. I worked in a casino full time and did the cerec position part time as they needed me. I would say about 75% of cerec people work another full time job. When we get together the discussion is always about what each of us are doing in addition to selling cerec. Best story I heard was a specialist who also worked as an electrician.

Then what will be the differentiator for Patterson?

Why quit if you're double dipping?

I'm going to double dip and make more than if I stayed on as a cerec specialist. Even part time $66,000 isn't enough, especially with no expenses. My new base is $85k plus expenses. Kind of a no brainier I love that Patterson doesn't believe in non compete agreements. Thank you Scott!

Apparently 4 more CS have left since the FY ended last week. Not a viable position anymore. It been taking too long to revise the comp. plan, and since the job market is fairly strong people are moving. Not a good reflection on Patterson in Sirona's eyes.

Ok what am I missing? Are you saying that you were working "part-time", when in fact it is a "full-time" position?? Say it isn't so. Reps would never endeavor to double dip like that...

Is difficult to make a living selling Cerec. They took the ortho product and labs away from us. We are restricted to selling GP dentists only. There are Cerec specialists who haven't sold anything in 1.5 years. We make $65k a year with no expenses of course we have to work at this part time and take another position. I don't know a Cerec person who doesn't work a second job.

Wow, has this industry changed - for the Worse.

And not that it matters but the dentist gets someone calling on them as useless and incompetent as they are - nothing new there.

$ 65k without expenses ? Have some dignity and give yourself and your family a living wage - quit and get a job driving a truck or checking groceries Maybe a Wal-Mart Greeter ?

Leave the cerec sales to wetbacks, boat people and other flavors of illegal alien invaders. Forget professional welfare grifters - to most of them the cerec job would represent a pay and benefit cut and a major step down.

Dental Sales = the Bum of the Month Club.

You don't know a CEREC specialist who doesn't work a second job? Weird, I'm guessing all the reps who make in excess of $250k work a second job? You obviously don't know anyone. Are there reps who make less or nothing more than base? Of course but these people can't sell. Don't hate the player hate the game.

i can guaranty unless a CEREC specialist makes an additional $185k a year at another job, no CEREC people are making $250k. Do the math. Each system is $129,000. The average specialist sells 10 a year. That's $1.3k. If you were paid 10% you'd only make $130,000. The truth is the margin on these systems is about 30%, so the entire profit Patterson makes on an average CEREC Specialist is about $360k. 10% of that is closer to the actual commission rate that's a whole $36k a year. Which means you made your $65k draw and no commission for a total take for the year of $65,000 - of course minus your expenses.
I understand Home Depot pays $55,000 for a department manager with no expenses to worry about. Seems like a no brainier. Home Depot.

"Seems like a no brainier. Home Depot."

Plus you meet a better and more competent class of people than calling on a dental office or trying to educate or work professionally with imbecile Patterson retail reps.
