I have an opportunity to interview for an East Coast position selling to derms and plastics. They're telling me $200k is realistic first year. Any insight into this company? What's the culture like, management style, what can I expect from the position, how do docs view the products?

Don't believe the numbers that are thrown out with any of the laser companies (Cyno, Syneron/Candela, Pamomar, Lumenis, Sciton, etc., etc., etc.

Any recruiter that tells you youre going to make 200k your first year is lying and it's one of the biggest lies that's gone on for years. Do some reps make that money? Maybe a couple at each company, but it's not the average and it hasnt been since 2008.

If you need medical experience and lasers will get your foot in the door, then go for it. But a lot of medical sales jobs won't even consider lasers "real medical sales." It's more like selling copiers or used cars... Yes, those are serious comparisons that get thrown out.

I made good money selling lasers for a few years, but that was years back and it was a much different industry. Don't take my work for it, go ask around how many plastics, derms, med spas and laser centers are looking to buy more capital equipment? Then check how many used lasers are all over the market and places that have gone out of business... then make your decision.

Previous poster is correct. The laser business is pretty dead and has been since 08. It was a bubble and extremely saturated. Most doctors don't actually make much, if any money with lasers.

If you asked this question in 1998-2007, the answer would have been "take the job" and realistic comp would have been $200-500k.

90% chance that you won't make $200k and 50% chance that you'll be fired within 18 months if you take the job.

Do some research on Cynosure right now and you will see they have the hottest product on the market. I agree that the days of 300k are over but there are plenty of reps still making 200k or more. The industry has changed but there is still a few good products to sell on the market.

Yeah, ok Mr. Kool Aid drinker, what is this "hottest product on the market?" And let me guess, you don't work for Cynosure right?

Let me take a wild shot in the dark... Are you referring to cellulite removal??? Wow, there's only about a hundred companies that have been doing that for about 10 years now, not to mention the hords of used inventory for pennies on the dollar.

Are you referring to laser lipo??? Wow, there's only about a millioin systems on the market already, ranging from OB/GYN's, Family Practice docs and core physcians. Every plastic surgeon in the world knowing real traditional lipo is still needed for results.

Are you referring to resurfacing??? Fraxel, ActiveFX, DeepFX, Sciton, Cutera, Palomar, eMatrix, they all have it blah blah blah, blah blah blah.

My point is, the whole industry is a "me too" product industry. It's so easy for companies to get crappy devices approved based on old patents, that you have tons of snake oil out there for anybody dumb enough to buy in on it.

What next, the greatest hair removal system, some super great IPL??? Lasers are a joke.

Lets hear it Mr. Kool-Aid drinker, what is this hot product??? I'm sure it's sooo cutting edge and incredible. I know every time I open "Aethetics Today" I'm just wow'd by all the new IPL's and Co2's. Oh, so it's so great, now it's a secret and you don't want to tell us??? You sure are lacking credibility.

Yeah, thats what I thought. No offense man, people don't look to get into lasers anymore. Anybody with any background (with a few minor expections) are on to much greener pastures.

The problem is, you know this and you wont' tell us all about your "Hottest product in the market," Lets hear it.

Anyone in medical sales knows that Cynosure and all other "laser" companies are for those who couldn't hack it in real sales. You are a used car salesman at best. Do a couple reps make big money, yes they do but the fact of the matter is 90% of the sales force within these companies turn over after 18 months.

If you are wondering if you should take the job with any laser company, call every recruiter you know and ask them if future employers would see adding this to your resume a benefit. I know lots of recruiters personally and for the medical field having this job on your resume is a career killer. Sure you just might be the 5% who make great money and have a great time doing it however don't put all your eggs in one basket. Just my .02

You are all crazy! 5% making big dollars!! I think you need to do more research!!!! Just last month I know of several reps making over 40k. If you can't sell, you are out! Thats the chance you take selling capital.

Several could mean 3, and out of the half dozen or so laser companies that isn't a lot. and heck I have made over 30k in a month but don't often break over 125k per year. Call it what you want but I am honest and can repeat my income year over year.

I do not work for Cynosure but would as they are first in class. I work for competitor and I've been selling lasers for dental and medical for years. This site is unfortunately full of negative immature people complaining. I just wish people could be honest and speak in a way they would speak to there mother or boss. Why so much bitching.

Btw, I made $287,000 last year in my first year in aesthetics and won Presidents Club. So not bad. I wish you all the best of luck in whatever career choice you make.

congrats on a great year. How do you know anything about Cynosure - you don't even work there? Have a hunch you have a rather narrow perspective, honestly. And, you say above you've been selling lasers for years... what have you made recently if your above FIRST year ($287k) was years ago? You're name is lying blind squirrel.

Recruiters love Laser companies they turn more Reps over than Burger King turns Burgers. It's a slime ball industry having experienced it first hand. It's the porn industry of Capital Sales bar none ! If you like to rip people off and lie you found your calling. Back in medical sales alot more of a future beyond hair removal and the next hockus pokus device some aesthetic company comes out with.

Just go back to working 10-2pm and making 125k. Sorry you could not cut it....... Have you ever heard of Zeltiq??? 80% of reps made over 185k last year. Top rep in FL made over 500k. I don't care what you think about laser reps. If you sell, you will be paid. This is not a world for "professional visitors".....
