Intuitive Surgical da Vinci SP Gets FDA Nod, Prospects Bright

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. ISRG recently announced FDA clearance for the use of da Vinci SP surgical system in certain transoral otolaryngology procedures in adults. Surgeons can now utilize da Vinci SP robotic-assisted surgery to conduct radical tonsillectomy and tongue base resection. This fortifies Intuitive Surgical’s hold in the global robotic-surgery market.

However, post the announcement, shares of the Zacks Rank #4 (Sell) company fell 0.4% to $558.21 at close.

It is encouraging to note that last month, the FDA granted 510(k) approval to Intuitive Surgical’s Ion endoluminal system to enable minimally-invasive biopsy in the peripheral lung. (Read More: Intuitive Surgical Gets FDA Nod for Ion Endoluminal System)

    About da Vinci SP

Cleared for urology procedures by the FDA in 2018, the da Vinci SP system provides surgeons with robotic-assisted technology designed for deep and narrow access to tissue in the body. The system includes three, multi-jointed, wristed instruments and a fully wristed 3D HD camera.

Intuitive Surgical shipped 15 da Vinci SP systems in 2018 and a few hundred procedures have been performed to date.

    Robotics Shaping Up MedTech

The use of AI and robotically-assisted medical devices has created a revolution, courtesy of rising need for precision in surgeries and a spur in research and development (R&D) activities by MedTech companies. Notably, R&D activity has been fueled by a 2.3% Medical Device tax suspension made in early 2018.

Per a Cision report, the global medical robotic systems market will see a CAGR of 20.5% by 2024.

Other key players in the robotic surgery market are Accuray Incorporated ARAY and Stryker Corporation SYK. Accuray’s fully robotic CyberKnife radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiation therapy systems and Stryker’s flagship Mako, a robotic-arm assisted surgery platform, are currently much in demand.

    Price Performance

Over the past year, shares of Intuitive Surgical have rallied 30.7% compared with the industry’s 10.1% gain. The current level is also higher than the S&P 500 index’s 4.3% rally.

Why does ISI care if these indications were cleared or not? ISI reps still promote surgeries and pay surgeons for performing procedures that are not cleared...ladies, if you had a hysterectomy with your cervix removed due to dysplasia/pre-cancer/cancer- that procedure was not cleared. Based on all the hype around what a huge deal an fda clearance means, I would be worried... your procedure hasn’t been cleared and the fda published a warning..https://www.therobotreport.com/surgical-robots-fda-warning-cancer/

287 records meeting your search criteria returned- Manufacturer: intuitive surgical Event Type: Death Report Date From: 01/01/2000 Report Date To: 04/10/2019

Manufacturers and importers must submit reports when they become aware of information that reasonably suggests that one of their marketed devices may have caused or contributed to a death or serious injury or has malfunctioned and the malfunction of the device or a similar device that they market would be likely to cause or contribute to a death or serious injury if the malfunction were to recur. Manufacturers must send reports of such deaths, serious injuries and malfunctions to the FDA. Importers must send reports of deaths and serious injuries to the FDA and the manufacturer, and reports of malfunctions to the manufacturer.

Clearly says "may have". Is it you contention that the DaVinci robot "is" the cause she of all 287 deaths? Please provide your documentary evidence that supports your contention.

The event of death is listed under the davinci robot per the fda adverse event database . Prove to us it “isn’t.”

Up to you to provide documentation to support your contention. You have none, so STFU and get back under the bridge, troll

Do you think the families of those murdered by the davinci robot don’t reach out to me? What is your company’s running total for settlement payoffs to keep them silent?

Machines can’t commit “murder”. Just ask the gun manufacturers.

Based on that comment, who is the responsible party for the burned internal organs from arcing of a faulty cautery instrument, leading to, most often, sepsis and death??

Answer : intuitive Surgical and their product, the davinci robot.

If they aren’t guilty, why do they continue to pay so much in settlement fees to keep the victims and their families silent?

    Liability settlements? Sure.
    Murder prosecutions? Never.

Just saw a post on LinkedIn with a picture of an Intuitive CSR presenting a surgeon with gift to celebrate her 500th robotic case. Literally, the dude put photographic evidence of himself providing an inducement with zero pretense of a clinically relevant discussion. What an idiot...

Glad you brought this up. This happens all the time on LinkedIn with reps posing with their staff for their 100th, 250th, 500th etc case. They bring in cupcakes and personalized balloons and scribed pies and celebratory banners. Zero pretense of a clinically relevant discussion. The DOJ is watching everything. Which is so funny for these reps that post this sh*t.

What I see is a ton of deaths and injuries reported by Intuitive Surgical. If there is a new robot in the future, I hope it is better than that piece of junk clunky dinosaur called the davinci. It doesn’t even handle basic data analytics. POS
