    Hi,

I am a Pharma rep who interacted with and co-sold our pain Managment drug with local Depuy Synthes reps and I asked two of the Depuy Synthes reps about getting an opportunity with their company. They both Seemed to suggest that a jump to Ortho would be too big of step and recommended that I start with Ethicon. I am trying to figure how much on average a Ethicon rep makes. I know most of the Depuy Synthes reps are well over 200k and I don’t expect that, but how much are we reasonably talking for Ethicon? I make between 85-95k now with a company car and expenses.

I would appreciate any info or opinions on whether it’s possible to jump from Ethicon to Depuy Synthes, as well as an idea of average comp for an Ethicon rep.

    Thank you.

Base salary is between 65-75k. Total comp at plan is 125 - 135k. Good advice your peers shared. Ethicon is a solid starting block, as it gets you in the door with JnJ and can network more. The experience is...meh. Stick with it for 1-2 yrs, and you should be solid if you want to get into ortho.

it’s commendable that you’re researching and asking the right questions. I would say that it is difficult to simply transfer to Depuy Synthes from Ethicon because you need to have the cross-company contacts to accomplish that. also, there are trade offs to be considered in the lifestyles of the two jobs. The Depuy Synthes reps in my area work non-stop including every weekend. I know the one guy makes a lot of money because I’ve seen his house and car (BMW M5) but again he is working probably 75 hours a week, 7 days a week. Most Ethicon reps are working less than half that - 25-30 hours per week. Granted we are making 130k but we also spend a lot of time with our families and I golf every week and take multiple vacations every year. Does that matter to you? It depends on your priorities. Seems to me that getting into management at Depuy Synthes is the ultimate golden ticket as then you can work 30 hours a week but still make 300k. That will take you 10 years but it’s something to aspire to or consider. Our managers make closer to what Depuy Synthes reps make 200k and they don’t work much, maybe 30 hours a week. Hope that helps and good luck.

Depuy tools like to jerk off on their own faces. They don’t make nearly the amount of money they did 10 years ago and if you’re a woman in pharma they’ll try to fuck you. If you want to be a glorified box cutter and doctor jerk off specialist go there. If you want to sell and not have to babysit doctors on a daily basis go to Ethicon and try to jump into a start up a few years down the road.

A couple years ago I asked my Depuy counterpart rep who I was cross selling with if I could join him in a few ortho implant cases and he said yes. I met him in the lobby the next day and first he had me buy him a coffee and then he said he had to take a phone call and then never came banck. Those guys are the ultimate toolbags

Of course its possible but WHY?
Ethicon will pay you like a Pharma Rep. and that is how you are viewed in the OR.
Stay in Pharma and enjoy your life

Ethicon has been poorly run and mismanaged for years. Thats why you see their AVPs sit there for 15 years. No growth and no movement. So they have moved to be a political nightmare
