The healthcare sector has many challenges that require innovative management strategies and operational techniques to improve and keep their workforce. So, it is important to look at other industries that have used successful strategies and techniques to improve its workforce that could be incorporated in the hospital environment. As many hospitals are facing a personnel shortage while adapting to ever-changing federal regulatory guidelines, it is vital health care organizations adopt the successful approaches of sectors outside health care for recruitment and retention strategies. According to Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Places to Work “Research shows that what was good enough to be great 10 or 20 years ago isn’t good enough today.” (Bush, 2017).

    Learning from Other Sectors

The technology giant, Apple has some of the highest employee retention rates in the industry. Apple attributes this to creating a culture where employees feel like there leaders respect them and connected to something bigger (McCormack, 2016). One management strategy that Apple lives by is that they do not promote employees for the sake of promoting them. Their strategy is to keep employees in positions where they excel and reward with pay raises in that position. Adam Lashinsky of Fortune says, “Let people's talent their jobs, not the jobs define the people.” (Yarrow, 2012). Google is another tech company that has high employee satisfaction, which they contribute to their human resource management strategy. Google’s strategy is to recruit a diverse workforce of the smartest, most capable people over the experienced applicant. Also, Google’s innovative work culture has also led to a successful and engaged workforce. “Google’s HR nurtures its creative and innovative company culture by formulating policies that hire and retain the best talent.” (Pratap, 2017).

Best Practices Opportunities in the Hospital Setting

There were several commonalities amongst these companies regarding their management philosophies which put people first and encouraged ideas and professional development. Operational best practices of not micro-managing employees and providing an opportunity to try new things within the organization. A hospital could use the recruitment strategy such as Google by seeking the most capable people not just the most experienced and supporting a long term growth strategy to retain staff. Hospitals must create a well- organized resource management team that can identify high-risk areas of the hospital that have experienced high turnover, so they can develop strategies to reduce the turnover rates in those areas.

    Conclusion

Implementing these strategies and best practices policies would improve the workforce within a hospital setting. By observing the success of other sectors would provide an essential framework that could be modeled to increase employee satisfaction and retention. The long term health and success of any organization is linked to employee retention so, it is vital that hospitals adopt effective innovative management strategies and operational techniques to retain its workforce.
