Talked to my friend in the West and this person said that Medtronic is destroying their business everywhere. JnJ doesn't have a strong foothold, but still Applied is losing ground everywhere. They've yet to unseat a true Medtronic IDN yet. Just a couple of small hospitals looking to go cheap and save money.

Applied doesn't understand that surgeons don't give a rip about cost or the stupid business model. They will pay more for what works best and will give them the best outcome for their patients. Case in point is the DaVinci. Robotic surgery is the way of the future and hospitals will pay whatever the price tag says for it. Intuitive is far ahead of Medtronic and JnJ so you know they are lightyears ahead of Applied. Upper management at Applied is out of touch with reality. Intuitive is destroying JnJ and Medtronic and this market is about to be all theirs. In three years or less all the tools needed to preform any general, gyn, uro, ENT or thoracic surgery will be standard on the DaVinci. They have the perfect business model. If Applied's leadership had any business acumen they would pivot(you're a vertically integrated company so that should be no problem, right?) and go after arthroscopic surgery which is a growing, yet underserved market. But Applied will wait until JnJ and Medtronic go there and then do their typical 510(k) nonsense and always be chasing the pack. But hey, look at the upper management at Applied, they still think the DaVinci is just a novelty and this "phase" will soon be over. But what else do you expect from Boomers?
