This is the long term plan for Hospira. Move manufacturing over seas. Here is an article from 5yrs back when they closed a plant in Ireland. Note the comment to move to Costa Rica and India.

And if you didn't know, they are currently building a 40+ acre manufacturing facility in India.

The Irish Independent reports that another nail was hammered into the coffin of Ireland's manufacturing industry yesterday with the announcement that a medical equipment plant in Donegal is to close with the loss of more than 500 jobs.

The closure of Hospira will push redundancies this year over the 14,000 mark, many of them in manufacturing. Almost 30,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost since 2001.

They have been replaced with jobs in services and technology, leaving Ireland with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the EU.

But workers seeking jobs in traditional industries are now finding the task almost impossible. And in some areas, such as Donegal, the lost jobs have not been replaced.

The county has an unemployment rate of 17pc - four times the national average - and has lost more than 5,000 jobs over the past five years.

Stunned workers said the Hospira announcement came as a "bolt from the blue".

They were angry that the RTE newsroom had been notified of the closure decision by a US publicity firm, Fleishman-Hillard, before the workforce. Management said the decision to close the Donegal town plant in 18 months time was made because "Hospira must focus on improving profitability through cost savings and increased operational efficiency to ensure long-term success".

The 560 jobs are going to Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

Small business lobby group Isme expressed concern at the implications for 600 jobs in local companies which had supplied Hospira. It was estimated the job losses would cost the local economy €35m.

Small Firms' Association director general Pat Delaney said: "Irish manufacturing is now in freefall" and warned that the Hospira decision should "serve notice that Ireland must remain cost competitive or face losing thousands more jobs to countries with lower cost bases".

Redundancy figures show that, on average, 100 jobs have been lost every working day since early in 2003. Most of the pain has been felt in the manufacturing, engineering, distribution and financial sectors.

Things may get worse in lower-skill manufacturing according to IIB economist Austin Hughes. Last night he warned that the Hospira and other closures were part of a pattern of "churning" to newer, lower-cost areas like India and Costa Rica.

"Average wages and employment costs at about €5,000 in Costa Rica are one-sixth those of Ireland and we can see a large move in US investment to South and Central America," he said.

Despite the steep decline in manufacturing jobs since 2001, down nearly 30,000 to 223,000 last year, the overall numbers employed in Ireland continues to rise with a record workforce of more than 1.8m.

    * A German company yesterday announced plans to cut its workforce in the Co Mayo Gaeltacht by about one quarter. Caideil MP Teoranta, which makes appliances for the cosmetics industry, is seeking 15 redundancies at its factory in Tourmakeady.
