In my 40's and fed up with sales

I got displaced after we were purchased by another company. I am 41, and I just started an LLC, we'll see what happens. I did gain a skill from Pharm sales that will greatly help me, in all seriousness. Rejection. I had a senior rep tell me when I first started that "To make an omelette, sometimes you need to crack a few eggs." I seriously don't give a shit. In business, especially sales, (all business is sales really), you need to ask the Dr. for what you want.

I asked for the business. When I started doing that, I won trips, large bonuses, upgraded company cars. Every now and then I got tossed from offices, oh well. If you never ask, you'll never know.

I remember exactly when it changed. The first time I heard one of out sister companies was doing pods. That was something an MBA came up with, clearly not someone with sales experience. Having multiple people repeat a "commercial" to a Dr.? They aren't stupid, and that made them feel that way. Access slowly got worse and worse after that.

I remember thinking how happy I was that I didn't have a pod. Sales is about relationships. One and one. Not 5 reps with 1 Dr. That watered everything down. When I started, I was in a specialty division, and on the far end of my territory, Physicians would invite me into their offices. It wasn't uncommon. It was pretty much the norm. If you could close, it was like taking candy from a baby. I asked for specific segments of patients, and that was it. If they said no, I would ask "Why not," sort of in a joking tone. Rinse and repeat.

Best of luck friends. I hope you all find what makes you happy.

It always amazes me that people will get on CP and talk about how they're doing something other than pharma.

But they never say WHAT they are doing. Starting an LLC does not exactly say what you're doing. You never know, someone reading your post may be able to throw some business your way...

Why does that amaze you? That a former pharma rep would be conditioned to always be watching their back and covering footprints, and be possibly apprehensive about providing specifics on an anonymous board?

    It makes perfect sense.

I just thought about something. I find it weird that I've never seen a specific post about what people are doing after they leave pharma.

Could it be possible that those posts are being written but not posted by Cafe Pharma?

    Just a thought.

Specific post - I left pharma and I am now a PA. Happier - YES. More money - NO, JUST ABOUT THE SAME. Satisfied with myself at the end of the day - YES.

Good luck...as most companies out of pharma do not view pharma sales as true SALES, yet mere promotion.

Oh for heaven's sake -- they don't have to announce what company they're working for...just the industry.

I know that this thread is like a zillion years old, but you have to wonder why the hell someone would mention working for the govt. and talk about a cut in pay while not mentioning what they do. It makes you wonder if it is coming from a socialist/communist. I have serious issues regarding being employed by the govt.

then stay with Pharma. We don't tell you where bc we think little of our coworkers as well, and do not want them following us. I've been govt/academia since out in 09. Got 3rd degree and in real management. I have & science degrees. But I never let a punk manager fool me into believing I was less than an asset. The last few managers on way out were horrible..young n old and clearly trying to get me off payroll with reductions. Oh, squeezed out at 41. P Club ranked and top 2 in district.

Believe. You need to get out.

Hey, I am looking to get into product management as well. Not currently involved in the industry- 28 with a few years of good experience under my belt after college... any chance I could get some insight? I don't know how to PM on here, and all of the usernames show as "anonymous" to me...

Sales is a joke. It became that way with all the technology and micromanagement. You got conned, like we all did.

    Just move on.

Move to a bigger city like Dallas or LA, and there are so many great sales jobs that your head will spin.

Here is what I have learned: don't wast your time applying to these pharmaceutical companies on a cold application, because about 90% of these jobs are going to the friend of the manager or regional manager.
