ASK your doctor. Some controlled release formulations have been found to dump the entire 24 hour supply of the pill at once if taken with as much as a can of beer. It could be fatal.

    Alpharma to Change KADIAN® Labeling

Fort Lee, New Jersey…July 22, 2005…Alpharma Inc. (NYSE: ALO), today announced that, as a result of communications with the United States Food and Drug Administration(“FDA”), it has been requested to expand warning information regarding alcohol in the labeling for KADIAN® (morphine sulfate extended release capsules). A letter from the FDA states, “In vitro observations indicate that the extended-release characteristics of KADIAN® are compromised in the presence of alcohol. Until the clinical implications of these data are fully assessed, we request that changes be made to the package insert as indicated in the attached labeling to provide adequate information for the safe and effective use of the drug.” The company is working with the FDA on implementing these changes. The company will be contacting the physician’s who prescribe KADIAN® to inform them of the products potential interaction with alcohol.

The relevance of in vitro lab tests regarding KADIAN® to the clinical setting is not yet known. The company is planning to conduct in vivo bioavailability studies to assess the clinical implications of the in vitro data and will update labeling as appropriate once the data is available.

The company expects that final FDA approval for its 200 mg capsule form of KADIAN®, which was granted approvable status by the FDA in May 2005, will be delayed pending the results of the in vivo pharmacokinetic studies, which are not expected before the end of the year. KADIAN® is currently marketed in 20mg, 30mg, 50mg, 60mg and 100mg dosages.

So what your saying is that Al has always known about this interaction with alcohol and I should relax because it's all under control? Maybe that should have been one of the questions on the training tests. But then again I guess Al can't cover everything in a one week training program.

Kadian will be just fine. Unlike ALL the other loral ong-acting opioids, Kadian is dependent on an alkaline environment to breakdown. Alcohol isn't going to have much of an effect on this. Now yes we (Alpharma) will need to do some official studies to back it up.

It will all be ok and Kadian will land on top.

Kadian has been around since 1996 and has been prescribed to over 1.4 million patients without ever having any issues of patients taking it with alcohol. Kadian will be just fine.

Are you sure? How would you know it doesn't dump all the drug when taken with alcohol based cough medicine?? Did you test it?
We will know soon enough since FDA is MAKING you test it!
