R.I.P.- TOM PETTY..

 

Tom Petty ---- my rock and roll heart is broken. My absolute FAVORITE band of all time. I caught him early on because I was such a rocker - they were punkish, different, delightful. Then "Damn the Torpedoes" hit in 1979. I was in love. Saw him at a Jai Alai fronton down here in FL - on the way, my Dad's old ass Datsun sedan overheated and the head cracked. We babied it all the way to the fronton. I was so excited I wouldn't even take a hit of weed when it passed by (and I was a major stoner then) because I wanted to hear every note and remember every song. We left my dad's car at the Jai Alai fronton. Seminole County sheriff's deputy drove me and 2 friends to Orange County, then that deputy took us to Brevard County, and then that deputy delivered each one of us to our doorstep. Parents were on vacation and we had no one to come and get us. Needless to say, when my parents got back my dad was pissed he had to tow his car home 50 miles away.

In year following that, I saw him again in Florida, this time they were stars - "Damn the Torpedoes" was a huge hit. They played the Lakeland Civic Center, and I knew there was only one decent hotel where the acts stayed. We ended up at the hotel outside of the front door. In came the limos.....and my friend and I were the only fans there. We met the entire band. Tom was so nice and sweet and laughed when my friend told him that his pictures were plastered all over my bedroom. I "bragged" to him that I discovered them early on - and he asked me what I thought of "Damn the Torpedoes!" Holy fuck - MY idol was asking my opinion. I stammered all over myself trying answer him and when he asked my favorite song was off of it, and when I said "Even the Losers" he smiled - he said, "Me too." We got autographs, and then my ballsy friend said, "How about a kiss?" I was mortified - REAL fans don't do stupid groupie shit -- ugh. Tom laughed and said - how about on the cheek? So we each gave him a quick peck on the cheek.

Saw him many more times including in his home town of Gainesville. Say what you want about him - he and that band produced some of the best rock music ever. Heartfelt lyrics, kick ass musicians....just got up there and played their hearts out. Lyrics that are timeless - to lovesick teenagers, soccer moms, rednecks, yuppies....his lyrics are timeless for me. If I ever do karaoke (which I have to be shit faced drunk to do) it is to a Tom Petty song. I don't need the monitor for 80% of his songs - I know them absolutely by heart.

I wish I could thank him for what he had meant to me..

 

Great story Fuckie, here's mine albeit not quite as good as yours.

In early 1981, my bff talked me into going to see Tom at the Roxy in Hollyweird. On my way to CA in 1968, I’d met a guy in Las Vegas named Bob Welch. He was in band at Caesar’s Palace and later became front man for Fleetwood Mac for 5 albums (Future Games, etc). He left FWM when Stevie joined for the 1st white album. So on that night, my buddy worked us up to the edge of the stage (one of his many magical talents) and for a moment – there we were, the 4 of us (Tom, Bob, my buddy and I – and of course Stevie) all just a few feet apart. We were stoned to the skeezonk and they sang, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” which had JUST been released. It was a magic moment that I've savored ever since. My bff has passed, Bob has passed and now I realize, of those 4 guys, I’m the LAST MAN STANDING.

The only other time I ever saw him in person was when I had a Match.com date with a female singer who had a pass for the premier of his movie by Peter Bogdanovitch at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank. It was a studio premier, invitation only, the entire band was there to meet and greet but not to play. It was a long movie, had an hour break, free wine (good wine) shrimp, the whole shebang. She was a date so naturally I paid more attention to her than to him but I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you get the chance to rent the movie Fuckie, I would do so…

Tom Petty dying has really affected me.
