why do you want the job?

I'm a recruiter and an ex-pharma rep. I talk to people like you everyday. I know your type when I see you - You're exactly the type of person that gives all pharma reps a bad name. You're lazy, complacent, and content. You're someone that does the minimum to get by and spends way too much time "hoping that you'll be able to hang on". Years of a relatively good paying, easy job, with very little pressure has made you complacent. Dropping donuts, lunches, and samples all week are hardly marketable skills that companies are looking for. Please don't try to tell me it's more because we've both done it. Combine the complete lack of fulfillment of the job these days, with constant micro management and you hardly have a good environment in which to work. The pharma industry has been a great place to be employed until the past few years. Do you know anyone that feels good about themselves at the end of day anymore? Oh, how I hate dealing with people like you. You're exactly why so many medical companies won't consider pharma reps. As an ex-pharma person, it still pisses me off when an HR person says to me "we won't consider pharma reps - they're not sales people and they're all lazy".

Let me enlighten you with some reality. I wish I had a dollar for every ex-Pfizer, ex-Sepracor, ex-Reliant, ex-Wyeth (and on and and on and on) rep that calls me still looking for a decent job. Everyone that gets downsized thinks that it will only be a short time before they "land another gig". When that doesn't happen, and the severance gets low, panic sets in. I have a friend currently working as a janitor to get by. You would be amazed at how many resumes I get from people downsized that are trying to get back into the industry. It's nearly impossible to get back in these days because everyone is either in the process of downsizing, or they will be shortly. Novartis still has 6 reps per POD (down from 7)!! What other industry has 6 people selling the same product to the same customer? Do you want me to predict what's going to happen at Novartis, or should people there just try to "hang on"?

My advice to younger reps is to get out of the industry if possible. The pharma industry will never be the same. Too many factors are driving the changes that are taking place. You can "click your heals" and wish for the status quo, or you can do something to protect yourself. Anyone that is 25-30 years old needs to look down the road and make themselves more marketable by developing new skills. They need to protect themselves, not stay in a dying and shrinking industry. There are a lot of jobs out there that pay better, and sure as heck have better futures than the pharma industry.

I hope that you're able to "hang on" if that's what you're level of challenge and fulfillment is. But please don't give someone younger bad advice because your aspirations are low.

If I knew the recruiter who posted this previous response, I would hug them!!! I have 12 years of pharmaceutical sales experience, including some with Next Wave( nothing against them). I have been unemployed for 2 years because pharma sales dosen't count as sales experience. If you are trying to get on with a big pharma company, be careful. I worked for the largest healthcare company in the world, and was still downsized. I had great numbers, but it doesn't always come down to the things in your control. I expect the typical newbiew cafepharma response from you "wanttabes", that think your *#@$ doesn't stink, just wait and see.

For the recruiter that previous posted this message: Thank you, and if you want to talk to someone who wants to get back into true selling, please reply.

Ok seriously. I can't stand hearing any more kudos about people like this Avi character, who have been here from the start and should be looked to for advice, are you serious? I have heard he pretty much sucked Jarosz's ass like no other and DJ never realized he wasn't ever even working. Oh and it must be nice to move to a territory that someone else got up and running for you and then you take the recognition for it. This company is a cheese dick support group.
