Hoboken police arrested a pharmacist on Thursday for allegedly stealing morphine and other drugs from a city hospital.

HOBOKEN— A pharmacist was arrested on Thursday for allegedly stealing morphine and other drugs from a Hoboken hospital.

Jonathan Kakowski, 28, of North Bergen, stole morphine, fentanyl and hyrdomorphone from Hoboken University Medical Center over the last few months, said Hoboken police Capt. Charles Campbell. Kakowski allegedly stole several vials of the drugs from his employer, and was charged with tampering and theft of movable property.

Hospital personnel notified city police on Wednesday, after discovering that a staff member was bypassing internal security features, Campbell said. Within 24 hours, detectives determined that Kakowski had used a syringe to extract the drugs from the hospital's supplies 177 times, he said. Kakowski stole the drugs for his own use, but it's not clear if he used them while at the hospital, Campbell said.

"I would like to commend Capt. Campbell and his Anti-Vice Squad for taking immediate action to bring this investigation to an arrest yesterday," Chief Kenneth Ferrante said in a statement. "I would also like the community to know that our investigators have advised me that all indications show that this crime was committed for personal use and not to cause harm to others."

Campbell said the cooperation of the hospital staff and the tireless efforts of detectives was integral to resolving the case so quickly.

Kakowski has been suspended from the hospital while the investigation continues, according to sources close to the investigation. He could not immediately be reached for comment.

The tampering charge is considered a second-degree crime—which potentially carries a sentence of five to 10 years in prison—due to Kakowski's status as a healthcare professional, officials said. He was released from Hudson County jail after posting $25,000 bail.

Jarrod Bernstein, director of communications for CarePoint Health, said that the hospital conducted an internal investigation and that the hospital isn't aware of any patients being adversely affected by the incident.

"We have taken all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our patients and our employees and we continue to review the situation and cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities," he said in a statement.

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer praised CarePoint Health staff and city police for their work on the case.

"I commend the Hoboken Police Department Anti-Vice Unit under Captain Campbell and Chief Ferrante for their swift response and for all their work to keep our community safe," she said in a statement.

Former Pharmacy Director at Beth Israel Medical Center charged in theft of narcotic painkillers from hospital: Pills worth over $5.6 million on black market
BRIDGET G. BRENNAN, New York City’s Special Narcotics Prosecutor, announced today the indictment and arrest of ANTHONY D’ALESSANDRO, former Director of Pharmacy Services for Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan, for stealing and illegally possessing nearly 200,000 oxycodone pills, which he allegedly obtained from his place of employment since approximately 2009. These pills carried a street value of approximately $5.6 million.
D’ALESSANDRO, who worked at the hospital for approximately 14 years, was arrested at his home at 35 Lynbrook Avenue on Staten Island this morning. He is expected to be arraigned later today in Manhattan Supreme Court, Part 94, before Judge A. Kirke Bartley, Jr.
An indictment charges D’ALESSANDRO with Operating as a Major Trafficker under New York State’s Drug Kingpin Statute. He also faces one count of Grand Larceny and 247 counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.
The large-scale theft of the highly addictive opioid painkillers came to light following the recent merger of Mount Sinai Medical Center and Continuum Health Partners, Beth Israel’s former parent company, to form the Mount Sinai Health System. Immediately upon receiving an anonymous letter, with accompanying documentation, the new administration initiated a comprehensive investigation and internal audit. The case was then referred to the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for further investigation and prosecution.
As Director of Pharmacy Services, D’ALESSANDRO was responsible for overseeing all of the medication stocked and dispersed at Beth Israel, located at First Avenue and 16th Street.

....defamation, slander, libel to an honorable profession. We all know the truth. "Men" are fallible and some go that way, others another wrong way, or just a mistake or three. So, put the boulder down pious one. It's the human condition everywhere, in all occupations and professions or walking the streets without a job.

But, all in all, I know a 'hundred'...hundreds of pharmacists who work their rears off everyday in retail machines, hospitals, LTC, MO, etc. across this great country. Thank God for their efforts. What the "CVSs" or whatever do, to make them work 'til things are bursting at the seams under the pretense of caring for patients is the far bigger CORPORATE GREED crime committed each day in the land. Just cause corporate 'leadership' isn't likely to be put in colonial 'stocks' (without Options...) doesn't mean they aren't as guilty as this fellow who is paying his price without the extra effort.
