As long as the existing long time IT executives remain then expect continued scheduled lay offs because they continue to F things up. IT leadership reminds me of Yahoo CEO (marissa) in that her flawed strategies and incompetence never gets her fired but instead the rank and file get laid off / fired. The entire IT leadership need to get fired or laid off and then and only will thins truly change. Lay offs are just a distraction for incompetent leaders to continue getting away with F'ing things up. The worst are at Consumer and Pharma R&D

Most of the ITLT have been here less than 5 years, who are you referring to?

Layoff conversations started today in Raritan.

Why do you think certain VP's were forced out? They challenged SM and his pals he brought with him as to the new IT structure and the layoffs. Those that spoke their mind were all kicked out in the last 12 months and those that stayed - particularly the ITLT and North America VPs - drank the kool-aid and sold out the people and the business to stay in SM's good graces.

SM made cost savings commitments to the Exec Committee by 2017 and he over-promised. He can only get close by cutting his biggest fixed cost - the employees. Meanwhile to get the rest he is pulling every trick to move to SaaS as much as possible this year, because he then shuts down his second biggest expense, infrastructure, and got Finance to agree to class SaaS solutions as a non-IT expense.

Smoke and mirrors. There will be a new CIO in 2018 when the business finally realizes what happened and that SM was just a sneakier version of LC.

Did they give the historical 2 weeks per year severance? If so, was there a cap on it?

I heard it was the standard 2 weeks with a cap at 1 year. They cut a lot of good people so who will do the work? This is the beginning of the end of IT in Raritan, start looking for roles in Tampa if you want to stay with J&J

If Tampa is the end game, then why the Reno at raritan?

The end game is to consolidate real estate. The new open floor concept allows more people per square foot then the traditional cubes. J&J will sell off real estate after the renovations. Then maybe AS will move to Raritan and out of that building on Rt. 22.

The layoffs and changes are related to role changes globally. You will now be service owners, service engineers, and service specialists. After that, they can hand it to an outside company.

the sad truth is that it is all a game. The first rule in any game is to know you are in one. Forget about doing what is right for patients, shareholders and the community and do what is right for you which means kissing up, agreeing with senior management, pretending to drink the Kool-Aid and or better still just drink it by the gallon. In the end the game is to get paid and get promoted so you can live the American dream. Everything else is a waste of your time. If you don't believe me then look at the leadership and your managers and ask yourself what have they done for the company to get them where they are. Don't hate them for playing the game and playing it well. Ignore me at your own peril.

Well said, our leaders have to pay bills too and put their kids through college. Culture in IT has gone down the tubes across organization. They fired anyone who stood up to them. We thought LC was bad but SM and his gang is worst. They have completely destroyed IT in J&J and will take years to recover from the mess and expenses these guys will leave when they are gone e.g. we are hiring and creating jobs in location that have no value to J&J like the center in Ireland & PSSC.

I feel bad for colleagues in shared services on AS and GTS side. Can you imagine working for people like SW. Hear he does not like been challenged so people are doing whatever he asks.

It amazes me that any of you think you could do a better job. Follow SM's career and you will see he has greatly improved both IT and the stock and each company he has worked for. JnJ clearly recognizes the problems with IT hence why they hired SM. I don't think I have heard one intelligent comment on this thread just a bunch of slander.

No marks for guessing you are one of beneficiaries of this regime. IT today in J&J is run by McKinsey and Co., leaders cannot even piss without their permission. Spending 10's of millions for nothing. So far what is the impact of this leadership on J&J business. Please be specific in terms of outcomes and don't even try to say look at our stock price as that has nothing to do with IT.

Accurate business planning, effective marketing, global sales, systematic management, real time monitoring, instant customer support and long term business growth cannot be achieved at the optimum level without IT. I think, it is impossible to attain long term business success without leveraging the benefits of information technology in this digital age. The companies have to bear a reasonable cost to achieve this success because using an innovative approach in business strategy, employing highly trained IT professionals and making right decisions at right time are the prerequisite of business success.

An example of how this has improved under the new leadership is the use of IBM's Watson to predict patient outcomes. Applying artificial intelligence to health data and increasing the accuracy with which patients are treated is hugely beneficial for the overall business success of Johnson and Johnson. Let me remind you this is just one example of the many recent changes the IT department has made that benefit the CONSUMER.

Lol - so where was SM's prior international experience? Did you know that CVS was not renewing his contract when it expired? If not for J&J he would have been on the street. And he got J&J because SP was already talking to Alex and the ExComm and wanted someone she trusted as CIO reporting into her and got SM the job - even though she didn't officially start until after him because Bayer negotiated with her and J&J that way. And he is already failing on all the $$$ he promised to the ExComm. Once SP is gone SM's days will be numbered.

Glad to hear you like the Kool Aid though. Enjoy it while it lasts - the next regime will most likely kick you and the rest of the his minions to the curb.

You are right about what IT can and does for business and hence J&J has had an IT department for as long as I can remember. Not something we invented recently. The question was about how worse is new regime.

On innovation J&J IT did all that and will continue to like any organization so tell me something new. About Watson, there is business case and like many healthcare companies J&J is trying to figure across variety of use cases. IT did not bring Watson to J&J. Please claim credit where this regime made a difference.
