Ride Alongs a Liability?

Has anyone heard anything similar? A friend of mine works for a consulting group works with Novartis Oncology & Pfizer among others. She has heard that legal is saying that the traditional manager ride-along/field contact is a huge liability for companies. Having the manager in the car or following a rep is a big distraction and has caused accidents - - like texting while driving. My friend's company has been asked to develop a better manager-rep working model that is more cohesive. The process will flip, and the responsibility will be for the rep to reach out to the manager. Something like, rep will be required to "invite" manager to work with him (one day per month or whatever) when they feel they need the managers input or expertise on something.

Works for me. Better than reviewing data in the car and re-hashing sales calls all day.

    Anyone ?

They dont need a new model. They should just go back to the way things worked 15 years ago.
I would work with my dm 2 days per qtr. I would call him on fridays and we woukd talk about the territory
For about an hour. We also had breakout meetings one day per month so we coukd share ideas and get more product training. As for more liabilty no, i would kick the lawyers out of my office. We are a mobile work force and everyone here understands that.

I would welcome the day I could invite my DM to ride with me! Their visits are so useless! Been in tne industry 20+ years and my best DMs were the ones I say the least. I knew they trusted me and they new I would work for them. It is all about TRUST!!

Ask guys in biotech about ride alongs...one at mid year and year end (reviews). Mgr may see two customers all year. They all seem to do well...the longer you are in this business the less you need a ride along.

Most other industries have management only at the reps request...rare.

I almost called the police on my manager for yelling so loudly in my face. I was too afraid to lose my job. Oh and he was shrieking like a hyena in heat because my son left a granola bar in the side door cubby area.

Looking back I wish I'd done it.... Had him escorted out of my car for harassment. I wish him many sticky ride alongs with diaper odor.

Fake reports can lead to problems with NPC for the managers but in reality that won't happen. Just signing off on doing a physical inventory can lead to problems with the FDA. If a manager is too lazy to actually do a physical inventory he deserves to be fined and to have to deal with all the legal problems as a result of their laziness.

Ride alongs are antiquated like "share of voice". We have the technology of the 21st century but the ideals of the 19th.

With so many new regulations, managers should be mainly checking off on regulations, ie; sample inventories, legal requirements, etc.

Reality is - mine has never checked physically my samples. I wouldn't advocate getting rid of him either.

Don't want to get rid of her either until they want to bury you with some bs. The very least they can do is count some samples correctly for all the money they make. Just saying.

As a DM you want to just jump out of the car with about the 20% of your district (some of you guys actually get it , show up on time , clean car -extra brownie pts!, know where you want to go that day, I'll cut out happily at 2pm after I buy lunch!) .. the 20%'ers, complaining about their car not running right (get it fixed , it is free dummy!), wanting to rat out their horrible counterparts (you spent how long on that spreadsheet to show me that your counterpart is not working?), it's like being trapped on a plane.

Why didn't you do something about the counterpart that wasn't working before a spreadsheet was made? I had a manager who never bought me lunch but I am sure that the manager expensed lunch everytime a fake fcr was written.

My Manager did same thing. Caused me to pull over one day and called fellow Managers from my division off to the side of Dunkin Doughnuts to discuss his actions and mine. He finally was demoted! I found myself recording his tantrums and still to this day have them archived for that "Someday" situation!

Novartis is riddled with bad managers but not like my Clown Leader was!

I've been in the industry 15 years and have had only one good manager, which was not at NVS. NVS does have the worst managers in my experience....just look at the discrimination lawsuit! Field visits are a waste of time! They are distracting and I really can't get my work done, and there's never any coaching that goes on. I can't tell you ONE thing the 3 managers I had while at NVS did for me while on a Field visit. Mostly I felt like I was being graded each field visit. There was no effort to help me or my sales in any way. Just an extra body who got in the way in cramped offices, making the whole thing awkward. Most managers are just lurkers and drs don't really want them there!

    Right On! No Value !

Those of you who know me best remember me when I said it to a group of District Manager at Florida meeting: We (Novartis) need to start focusing on what the customer needs from us, rather than what we need from them!". Its not rocket science but we always find a way to make it harder for the doctors, office staff, and public with so much paperwork/bureaucracy!

I think I know who you are. I had 3 wonderful managers prior to the beast I wanted to call the police about during a field ride. I posted above. I was afraid to report him so I put through a request for a "reasonable accommodation" that he stop harassing me to the company doctor. Welllllll the doctor violated my HIPPA rights and called, without my knowledge or consent, the head of HR for my business unit. wow!!! I couldn't believe it. The whole thing snow balled and HR told BPO and despite proof of harassment and a coworker's telling them of her/his own harassment by this manager, he was found blameless!!! I never wanted the BPO but they lulled me into believing they were there for my benefit. Yeah, ok
