The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the cost of the health care workforce by identifying three key drivers of labor costs within a specific health care service, facility, or other health sector-related occupation (e.g., labor supply, productivity improvement, technology, or personal benefit design), evaluate current industry solutions or remediation activities to address the identified labor cost and predict future changes (e.g. policy, funding, or public support) that might exacerbate or accelerate the solutions.
For this paper a Hospital was chosen for evaluating the cost of health care workforce and identifying three key drivers of labor costs within the hospital. The three factors that will impact the cost of health care for a hospital will be labor supply, technology and productivity improvement.
According to Nowak (2010), “in 2006 The American Hospital Association reported that by 2020, the demand for nurses will outstrip he supply by 37%. (p. 14)”. Therefore, the labor supply of nurses for hospitals will be critical and that will also impact the patients as well as the quality of care received by the patients of a hospital. In addition to the shortage of nurses, technology will also impact the hospital and the quality of care it can provide its patients.
In addition to the shortage of nurses, technology requirements will also impact the cost of health care for a hospital. According to Johnston (2014), “Inter-professional communication (IPC) is a key step in the delivery of patient care. Improving this communication has the potential to improve care quality as numerous studies have highlighted the dangers of communication failures in health care. (p. 14). Therefore, if a hospital is going to continue to provide the most effective meaningful health care to their patient’s they must invest in the technology to support its staff.
Finally, in addition to labor supply and technology, productivity improvement is also a cost factor for a hospital. If a hospital is going to provide quality health care and meaningful use how its productivity works is just as vital. For example, the medical records unit should be just as efficient as its nursing staff or technology or the hospital can be adversely impacted.
In conclusion, the cost of health care continues to increase due to labor, technology and productivity improvement. However, if a hospital is going to survive in the coming future it must find a way to incorporate all of those requirements as it delivers meaningful healthcare.
