As a rising employee, looking for ways to advance, how is it that a senior manager with years of success is overlooked for director positions? Is there no upward momentum here? Should reps such as I look elsewhere to move forward?

Yes, upper management is skewed. It's all about who likes whom and only then will someone take you under their wing to mentor you and propel you forward. All posted positions that are internal promotions to upper management are just for show, they already know who they want to place in the role, the posting is a formality. Unless you've been tapped on the shoulder already or you start networking and kiss A** like mad and actually end up being taken under someone's wing you should either A) be content where you are or B) leave to find a company you can actually grow in. The IDP is a joke. Or stay here, get your masters degree on Zoetis' dime and then leave. Tye is awesome btw.
