What did a new rep make per year back in the 70's through 90's?

I hired in in 85 at $24,500 and made $1,200 bonus per quarter. With a company car.
That compared to my $22,000 per year as an R.N. It seemed pretty damn good to me.
This year made $118,000 all included as a PCP rep. Still pretty damn happy.

March 1973: $675/month plus bonus,3 cents/mile for personal use of fleet car. !976: $14,000 plus bonus after promotion and job change. 1978: $$19,000 1986: $31,000 and $9600 bonus.

1989: hired at $31,500. $36/month charge for personal use of car. Thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I'd gladly work for that salary today if the business would revert to what it was then too!

1976 - $12,000 salary and no bonus...Switched companies in 1978 and salary was $15,000 with target bonus of $3,000

1983--right from college--21,000 plus bonus and I drove a beautiful Citation!

1990..fresh off active duty, bidding war..LOL..between TAP and Pfizer....PFE won the bid at 33K...inherited a POS from old hospital rep, detaield at my expense to remove questionable stains on seats....thanks DKozak....bonus target 10 K per year. Shit Hot, buddy. I miss those days.

Started in 1975 at $14,500 with a bonus around $1,500. After being in the military even as an officer this was a great deal. They gave me a 1974 2-door silver Olds Cutlass from the previous rep. What a great industry it was back then

1984; 19000/yr, target bonus at 2000, drove a Chevy Celebrity; small company, best job I ever had; we owned the territory, no micromanaging; manager came in 2x/year to work with you; national meetings were true celebrations of your success the previous years.

1985, drove a 1984 Ford LTD, next year 1985 Taurus, I thought I had died and went to heaven. What a POS. We had one national meeting a year that were really blow outs, with a name band or comedian. District meetings were the same, booze in the hospitality suite, dinner at top flight resturants, dancing at clubs after. This was one hell of an industry back in the day.

Oh well, everything changes as time goes on!

Very interesting information. Basically, it looks like a new rep of today makes less "real" money when adjusted to inflation (especially with the cost of housing). The one thing that seems to have been better back then was the fact that most reps were the only rep for their area. I think this led to more accountability and therefore more effort.

Started in 1988 with Ortho-McNiel @ 36,000 and bonus of about $15k. Now after 18 years made $146,000 last year as a hospital rep.

Hired in 1973 for 10,600, was making 7700 at National Biscuit Research. First car 1973 Ford Torino with a 350 V-8. Also received a meal allowance of $4.00/day which was payable via Travelletter. My territory was all of Queens with the yellow pages as my only tool. It was a fun time, now I have 48 days to retirement.

1983 with Marion Labs. I started @ $19,000/yr. My first year bonus was 15K. The stock options over the years becasue of how Cardizem did so well I made a fortune.

We had a guy in Detroit who tried to scam travel letter. They figured he got about 6k before the receipts caught up with the checks and he lost his $50,000 a year job. The unfortunate part was, he was on the management fast track due to his racial make up. For some reason it just didn't seem worth it to me. But then, I'm a bit of a pragmatist about that kind of crap.

I started with Squibb in 1979 with a base of $11,000 and the potential to make 5 to 6 thousand in bonus each year. Base salaries in the Pharma industry started to go up around 1983 when Merck started offering $29,000 a year to experienced reps (and published that number in newspaper help wanted ads)
