Sorry to say all....but there is racism and discrimination everywhere. Inside Medtronic, BS, Abbott, Biotronik... you name the company. There is change that is hopefully happening across the US and the free world to see people as people. To fulfil the hope of Dr. King when he said “I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character” and I would add their ability/qualifications when it comes to this particular discussion. I have had a "good ol' white boy" (what a racist label) as well as a "token" (another crap racist label) field manager. Both have had their strengths and weaknesses. One was quite qualified, the other did not have any business sense what so ever, was always making senseless mistakes and didn't learn from them what so ever (eg sending an email to one account during contracting with the complete pricing of another competing account. The resolution? A second email with the entire email body of "oops..please disregard" and then sending the original out a second time with all the pricing). One was focused on moving business forward, one was focused on self promotion. Guess what? Both were successful because the field reps were talented and worked to make their number making the inept successful. Being in the field as long as I have been, when career development conversations were had, my race, gender and age were all mentioned as a limiting factor in moving up. So until we are able to separate all this race, gender, etc. BS out of the conversation and mentality, we will never move forward as a society.

How many of you have a profile and connections on Linkedin? What is the purpose of that platform? Don't you try to use that "good old boy" system or connections to get a leg up or help with your career? There are certainly different types of insider systems we all try to tap into and there are "good old boy" insider systems in every business (you certainly see that in the customers you call on and their "insider" systems). That's not going to change but hopefully as part of corporate culture that will not be an impenetrable system but a growing open system to help identify qualified candidates.

So drop all the adjectives and start looking a people as people and what they bring to the table. Learn from the past, but don't let the past make you a victim but part of the change. It isn't going to be easy, short or clean but it is possible. Isn't that what this current movement is about?
