I work with all the equipment reps in Florida. Benco, Schein and Patterson. They are all horrible. Doesn't matter what company they work for. I sell the best compressor/vac system on the market and unless I bribe the reps with cash, they won't sell them because the competition bribes them as well. They will sell inferior products to their doctors to make an extra $50 or $100. It isn't just the equipment reps. The merchandise reps are no better. To sell handpieces I need to take them to lunch and give them cash for leads. This is my last year in the industry and I'm done. It's gotten to the point where the race to the bottom has finally reached the bottom.

Great industry and reps with high standards too.

    I believe you though.

This isn't dental. I've been a pharma, dental and now medical device rep. In pharma, we gave doctors gifts. Dental was cash as gift cards to reps. Now we donate to hospitals. It's all part of the game. With that being said, the main difference is that in the dental world, manufacturers spiff dealer reps to push their products as opposed to spiffing doctors directly. I've been with Patterson as well as Schein. The majority of the reps will push a product regardless of how good it is so long as they are given money to do so. Here is why. Let's take some big names for easy examples. A doctor is using 3M and they are happy with it. Dentsply offers me cash to sell their product. I tell the doctor about this new Dentsply product and they try it. I now make my commission like I would sell either brand plus I make the cash spiff money. If the doctor likes it, great, I look like a hero. If the doctor hates it, I tell him that I'm shocked because everyone else is loving it and I send the Dentsply rep in. Usually they will either solve the problem with free product (a different product in their catalog that the doc likes) or I call the 3M rep and tell him I need some free units of the product the doctor originally liked and give them to the doctor in exchange for the product he didn't like. Now I've avoided having a return and I can use the extra Dentsply products as free goods for other doctors and strengthen those relationships too.

This isn't just an under the table spiff thing. Many of the major brands offer dealer reps different things to sell their products. Take 3M again for example. Every quarter I would get a tear pad from them, the top sheet was for my eyes only and it included the promos geared towards me. Gift cards, vacations, tickets to events, etc. The rest of the pages were the promo sheets I could give to my offices. 9 out of 10 times, the promos for me were related to the promos for the doctors so it was incredibly easy for me to make extra money.

This is one of the reasons more offices think it's OK to buy their supplies from an online reseller rather than deal with a full service rep. No smoke and mirrors and they still get the educational lunch and learn for their staff via the mfr. reps.

Thankfully he went to Benco before he was sacked.
