I am currently a rep for Depuy/Synthes and I cannot wait to leave this horrible company. I loved my job when it was Synthes but hate it now that it is Depuy/Synthes. I have given my life to this company and they thank us by lowering our income and destroying our moral.

They have lowered our commission and we all know they are going to lower it again. They have decided to hire quintiles reps and forcing us to pay for them. At first their salaries were going to be paid by the company but now we have to pay the 60k. We pay them by taking a commission deduction that is supposed to equate to their 60k salary. The problem with this philosophy is that if I have a great year and have growth above the 60k that I am paying for the quintiles rep that extra money is given back to J&J for the "quintiles pool". WTF is the logic behind that? If for some reason we have an off year I have not been told if I have to write a check to offset the 60K. I have a quintiles rep that is a complete joke. No medical experience and I was told they cannot work after 5 or on weekends. Good thing we never work weekends or nights. Oh wait, we do. If I need them to run a set for me at those times I have to pay them additionally out of my own pocket....

Now we are supposed to sell Exparel to our recon surgeons. They have increased the cost to a $1000 and we have had to take hours upon hours of training for a product the pharmacies can compound for $200. Thanks again.

The final kick in the balls is the Mitek push into the sports med arena. I just got back from a weeks training and now I am supposed to go against Arthrex and Stryker for meniscal repair business again taking time away from my trauma sales.

My largest hospital was on a small discount for years and my manager felt the pressure of a possible RFP and agreed to a 42% discount. Thanks again. I guess when you never have to cover a case those decisions are easy to make. When I do not make quota I am sure my asshole manager is going to ask what happened? Probably put me on the CAP program or add another quintiles rep.....

ALL of my friends hate their jobs and are holding on until they find something else.. I hope some of you are not feeling the same way as we are. I have to go do a TFNA that I only make $200 for working. Maybe my quintiles rep will be able to make it so I can teach him what a femur is...

    Signed,

    Disgruntled

When this travesty is finished there won't be any Synthes reps left. Everyone I know has already left. Those that have not left don't have the ability to get out. Unfortunately it will only get much worse. Good luck.

I have been with Synthes for under 2 years. I chose Synthes over Stryker because my manager told me that my income would be 30% more than my Stryker offer. I am soo pissed because he lied about the current sales in my territory and when I asked him about it he said that the numbers he gave me were the projected income if I converted all the competitive business. He also did not tell me that the rep that I replaced has great relationships with the surgeons and staff and when I go to cases I am met with rude nurses and pissed off surgeons. I cannot even look at that lying SOB now. Of course I signed the non compete so now I am stuck...I contacted Stryker but they will not fight the non compete. I may have to move for a year after buying a house. I am shocked how unethical this company is....The thought of staying with Synthes is not a possibility...Since being hired I have made some good friends (not my manager, other reps). I wish that I would have spoken to them before taking this position. All of them hate their jobs....

If you are considering a job with Synthes speak to the other reps and get their take on this company. Don't make the same mistake I did..

Let's be clear. The entire downward cycle started when KC was promoted to VP. That is the exact moment it stopped being about the consultants, surgeons, and patients; and started being an internally focused company more interested in egos and bench press.

I totally agree with the rep that complained about being lied to by his manager. I know now that I am screwed. When I was going through the hiring process I met with my "team" to discuss my future. The younger guys were inexperienced but excited about the future. I should have known there was a problem when all that they spoke about was how much money they make. I tried to ask some serious questions of the only rep that has worked on our team for over 7 years. He never gave me straight answers and would always have an excuse not to take my calls or be able to meet with me. Fast forward 10 months. I am great friends with the senior rep and he is a star. He has great relationships with all the surgeons and staff, and is the person I call with any technical question. I asked him why he ignored me when we first met and he said that he did not want to tell me the truth because he couldn't be assured that I wouldn't run back to our regional manager. I have since learned that I made a huge mistake. The young reps know nothing about sales or how to be a consultant. Our senior rep shared that his income has decreased every year do to management decisions and will continue to decrease. He constantly gets phone calls from his surgeons complaining of the other members of the team not being able to help during difficult cases. He advised our manager of the complaints but he does not care. Once Synthes had 80% of the business now we have 50. I sold my house and moved my wife and daughter here just for this job. I hope that when our senior consultant leaves he can help me and take me with him....I hate going to work now knowing that my future is so uncertain. Thank you Depuy/Synthes....

I have not been with Synthes long but I also made a huge mistake. I met with out team which consisted of very green reps and one rep with over 7 years experience. The new guys spoke of how much money they make and the older rep was fairly quiet which should have set off alarm bells. Fast forward 10 months. My best friend is the senior consultant and when I have to deal with the young reps I cringe. They blow off more cases than they attend and they have very little clinical expertise. If I have any questions I call my friend. I asked him why he didn't tell me the truth about the territory or the team when we first met. He said that he could not trust me and to not trust anyone in this company including our manager. He told me that our business has declined every year. We used to have 80% of the business, now we have 50. He receives constant complaints from surgeons and staff about the other reps and can do nothing about it. He once contacted his manager and he didn't want to hear it.

I regret moving my wife to a city based on this job. I now am nervous about my future and I just hope when the senior consultant leaves he will take me with him....I have already met with S&N and Stryker hoping I can find a career not just a job.

Sums up the difference between Synthes and JNJ.

Do you mean Stryker? Synthes is JNJ. JNJ sucks the profits out of companies they buy and then move on to another acquisition. Its unbelievable how poorly they pay their reps, on the med device side anyway.

Think he means the difference bw Synthes & JNJ, cause Synthes cared. Reps mattered, relationships mattered, we had a voice. Now its all BS, contract managers, useless SCG and ball-less RM's. JNJ doesnt care about the reps, sales force, etc. its one and only bottom line

Exactly. JNJ only cares about the bottom line. Absolutely nothing else matters even a little bit.

i actually agree with this. Ive seen some unheard of institutional muscle being flexed by our 1MD while hospital overlay group lately. I still have no idea what these people are called.
