Hi all, I am finishing up my Ph.D. in organic chemistry and I am beginning the job search in pharma. One thing that is weighing very heavily on me: two years ago I was very stupid and got a DUI in California. I will be able to expunge it in Dec. 2022, but I will be looking for jobs well ahead of that time. I have been sober since, and work with young men to get them sober as well. Will the DUI's completely block me from getting a job in Pharma as a scientist with a Ph.D.? Is it company dependent, or is it something that is abundant in pharma? I've known many professionals who have gotten DUIs: nurses, doctors, lawyers, IT, etc. and it hasn't been a problem for them. Will it be a problem for me?
A dui won’t exclude you, unless the role you get requires driving a company vehicle. Honestly, being white, male, or straight will be a bigger barrier.
Thank you. In what regard do you work for a pharma company? I am looking into research and development, so I would be handling controlled substances.
So true, they don't even hire white males anymore. Last company i was at every white male was eventually replaced by a woman. The entire leadership team was ALL women. not one dude! Same as pharmacists? when was the last time you saw a white male pharmacist?
