Biopharma sector still growing despite layoff wave, Stifel report finds
The number of biopharmaceutical jobs is growing despite the sector’s market turbulence, but the gains are concentrated to larger companies, according to a new analysis from the investment bank Stifel.
Signal: despite hirings cooldown, growth in healthtech seems inevitable
Among the recent developments in the healthcare technology (healthtech) industry have been the acquisition by remote care management company MD Revolution of NavCare, another provider in the space, and the introduction of digital consultations by Amazon Clinic across the US, with message-based consultations in 34 states.
These moves reflect the industry’s growth and are complemented in this way by an increase in job opportunities within the sector. GlobalData research shows that active job listings in healthtech globally are up 28% year on year at the start of August. This is despite July seeing a drop in active listings from a high of around 66,000 to 53,000, based on the listings GlobalData has identified.
US continues to be a top destination for pharma jobs in recent months
This week, we take a look at hiring trends in the pharma industry over the last four months, encompassing Q2 2023 and the month of July. The US continues to be the top country with the most active job listings in the pharma sector recorded in the last four months. The number of active job listings in this space has been trending upwards in the US and China, with the exception of the month of July where the data extends only till 26 July.

Life Sciences Jobs Expected to Grow by 133,000 Over Next 10 Years in the U.K.
A new report called the Life Sciences 2030 Skills Strategy published in collaboration with the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry and the U.K.’s Office for Life Sciences, forecasts the addition of 133,000 life science jobs by 2030. The jobs will range across the sector and include biopharma, medical devices and other areas of the industry. Specifically, the report predicts the addition of 43,000 jobs in biopharma, about 90,000 jobs in medtech and another 55,000 jobs to “replace retirees” across the sector.
