Life after pharma

Looking for ideas due to a recent layoff. Deliberating staying in the pharma machine, which has its rewards but the never-ending, dysfunctional cycle and threat of layoffs has me searching for other options.

Has anyone made a move outside of pharma into a more rewarding career path? I have years of OR/device/pharma/b2b but really looking outside of any medical sales.

Any tips?

I have lots of friends who have made a successful transitions into the financial world and tech sales. You have great experience, especially with direct sales, so you should be an attractive candidate to many companies. I believe pharma's better days have past and the future only holds more of the same.
Just be open to anything that looks interesting to you and take the interviews. You're in the driver's seat now so be selective as long as you can afford to be. Best of luck to you!

I was just about to start the same thread and have a similar background to the OP. Ideas outside of finance?

Would love to hear some success stories of long-time reps getting out of the 'machine' and transitioning into something they truly like ( and hopefully close to the same comp as they have been used to). Thanks!

Anyone leverage an advanced degree ( MHA, MPH, Health Care MBA, etc) to either further themselves w their pharma company or escape the industry? Looking at one of these degree tracks and just not sure if there is an ROI there or not. I suppose being employed at all would be an ROI these days.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not the OP, but I appreciate this thread with real responses.

I'm on the younger side, and I know most likely my time will run out in the pharma world. So having some ideas for the future, and hopefully being a step ahead would be helpful. Thank you to those who are responding with real thoughtful suggestions.

Definitely have a plan B. If I were you I'd get an advanced degree: MHA, MBA, etc... That will keep you more relevant. Also get out of of regular Primary Care sales & try to get into Rare Disease & Buy & Bill. This will diversify your resume and once again give you more options if you stay in the industry.

I am thankfully in the rare disease space with a MS degree. So I am in a better position than most, however a plan B is something I want to have. I could teach at a university again, however those jobs are tough to come by, and the pay would be a third of what I make now.

I would like to get a MBA, but I dont have the money and my spouse and I are still making student loan payments. Some companies offer tutition reimbursement, but not as much as they use to. And those that do, you most likely need to be in a management position to qualify for grad school reimbursement.

Why do you need an MBA? These trolls can’t drive a nail in the wall!!! Have you ever seen a job ad requiring an MBA??

Life after Pharma ~ I suggest you look for Paige Jack on Linkedin. She left pharma 10 years ago and is one of the most well-connected people in our industry. She has something like 60k connections on Linkedin all in the medical space. She figured out how to leverage the skillset and relationships from pharma to build a significant international business. I've been to her corporate headquarters and seen the facility myself, it's quite impressive! She's very knowledgeable about the status of the pharmaceutical industry and is happy to share her knowledge with others.
