Direct Representative Hired as 1099 Representative

I am a Direct Sales Rep and recently hired as 1099 Representative for another company. The products are in different specialties and do not compete with one another. My direct sales rep position pays a very modest base with car allowance and commission and I work alone, no Pods, no ride-alongs and no micro-management.

I have 3 questions.

1) Do I risk losing my salaried position by throwing another drug in my bag? The contract language for my salaried position states that I should in no way compete with their product, which it does not.

2) How do I combine routing for the two? Right now I am focused primarily on my salaried position and visiting the 1099 MDs as I stumble upon them (basically if they are in the same building). I am essentially winging the second job.

3) How well will I be able to hide the fact I am double dipping? How long can I keep this going?

I am a new rep in the industry and thank you in advance for your suggestions.

As long as the doctors do not overlap, then you should be fine. But you are going to burn out fast. I would NOT try to sell my regular docs the 1099 products. That's really risky, especially if they ask and you happen to have a DM with you.

You better hope that if any of your "1099 docs" see you in a building with a DM for your "salaried job", they don't recognize you.

How did you bag the 1099 job? I know there are lots of 1099 reps that handle multiple products from different companies, just don't know where to find the jobs....

No company would approve of you having two jobs that overlap. That being said, go for it and know what DD is right: You WILL burn out and you could get caught if a 1099 client sees you with your DM and says something. Your other issue is how successful can you really be at TWO jobs unless you are willing to work 90 hours a week? What about space in your car for all the stuff? Better not leave something in there for your DM to see. Money is not the be all and end all. It sickens me how many people would sell their soul and all their free time just to make an extra 50K. Go for it but in the end, you will wish you had spent your time in school, with your family or on more worthy pursuits. (Unless your 1099 can turn into a business that you own with residual income.)

Do what you want and think you can do.

But remember, Job #1 is the guy paying you a wage, probably providing a company car and gas. Their position is that you should not be using their resources (time they pay for, equipment they provide) for another job.

Just understand the risk before you do anything ... because you may lose at least the job that provides the benefits, car, and perhaps the majority of your income.

You will not burn out if your one job is pharma, cuz that isn't really a job! Good luck with the 1099

1099 Representative opportunities

I was with genentech until the recent layoffs and I was working in financial services part time for the last three years (nights/ weekends) as a 1099. I did well enough that I have now built up a business that I have just taken full time. I'd be happy to tell anybody about it regardless of what state you are in, I live in NJ, and see if youmay want to pursue it too. give me a call, not soliciting, just offerring help for anybody looking for a good 1099 opportunity without risking conflict of interest with pharma, Gary 609-351-5033.
