So you surveyed doctors from around the country, and these are your findings? What was your sample size, and what were the specialties of the….wait, what's that? No, you didnt? Oh, then surely you can post a link to the survey that can back up your claims and quotes.

Until then, stay on the porch with the poodles. This is an adult conversation, and you keep stepping in here with tripe and kiddie-talk.

If I were you, I'd start going on LinkedIn, and sniffing around for links to former Pfizer RMs and State Directors that now work for 1 of 3 CSOs in the hopes of getting a CSO's DM slot. Thats what 3 KAMs I know are doing, and they aint having too much luck. Gee, what a surprise---no one wants to hire someone that sold Viagra or Lipitor or Celebrex with 5 counterparts .

    Dis-missed.

can't blame KAMs for taking those positions a few years back. they were sold a bill of goods that was not sustainable nor remotely possible in todays lawyer ran pharma companies. Now-all of these people will be decimated-and rightly so.
face it people - this is not a sales job, DMs are not real managers-do managers in real organizations look over your shoulder for 1-2 days straight watching your every move? Didn't think so (I am a manager). not sure how it got to this point...probably when number of calls and # of ride alongs became part of the culture and labeled as "performing".
As a manager, I can say that there are way to many of us and too many reps...PERIOD! this isn't debatable. Too many people in HQ positions with no value that touch and think they can direct the sales force-probably for the sake of attaining a GPM objective. the future is dim people, I am aware that there is no way that I can replace my income and all but 1-2 of my reps I am positive wouldn't be able to as well based upon how long they have been with the organization and what their salary is. we are all replaceable and are hoping that when the next layoff comes it isn't me.

BLAME KAMs? No, most of us envied their "work" lifestyle, and their value/pay ratio. I won't bore myself by repeating tales of ineptitude, laziness, and dis-honesty (taking credit for others' work, etc). We've all experienced the versions of the hilarious "KAM call", where they ask for success stories so that they can add gravitas to their made-up report.

All I can say is that as someone who's spouse works for a large healthcare consulting company, I know that large headcount cuts await Big Pharma. The job prospects KAMs and their bosses on the open market? Ooo boy, it's not going to be pretty.

And the headcount cuts that have been happening for years now are what-small??

Compared to what is coming? Yup. For the past 12 years, we've had to endure a series of small-to-middling cuts.

They're lining up one of these big, "Novartis"-type cuts.

Yes actually. Any idiot can see that there aren't enough cuts every time that it happens. new positions are "created" for some people and these positions are completely necessary.

what does having KAM experience qualify you to do? the only people placing these people on a pedestal is PFE. Embarrassing how much money the group of KAMs probably cost and how so little productivity come out of this group. Every Sr. Leader who signed off on sending an army of the KAMs out should be held accountable.

I wonder what Pfizer's headcount was about 10 years ago (or before their first pre-Lipitor LOE cut) compared to now. Factor in the reductions of Wyeth (probably 85-95% reduction), King (about 95%) and I think you will have a pretty big number. You may think that is small-middling, but I bet it's a big number. They cut their own salesforce, decimated two other companies sales force and is now left with how many??? Small to middling-really. I'm not saying there isn't more to come, but to say what went on is small is a bit of an understatement.

Compared to what is coming, it IS small to middling. Please do your homework. Most trade journals are available for free online. Fierce Pharma and many others provide reviews of a slew of industry journals and blogs. You may not agree with what they say, but keep informed. Pfizer's reach & frequency and share of voice strategies have been obsolete for over 10 years. We're going to overcompensate, and cut some forces to the bone. It' won't quite be be back to 1989 with one drug, one rep, but it'll be close.

    You'll see.
