Pharmaceutical Sales is really for dummies.

After a few beers, I finally see it clearly: this industry is really for dummies.

If you have a quality education and are smart, then you are making a big mistake even considering this for a career.

Add the downsizings every other year, and the losers in the industry, and you have even more reason to quit.

Personally, I can't wait to get downsized to start my new career. The nice house, the nice lifestyle are good, but these THINGS cannot replace self respect and the joy of having a job where you are treated like an adult.

Bye Bye Pharma. I know you are not going to miss me, but I also know that I got my life back and my spirit and life back.

For those of you that stay, have fun with the toys you get from this job, and have fun continuing to let the vipers in this industry suck the life out of you. Not me. Not anymore.

stop crying and man up. the job is ridiculously easy. if you try to find self worth through any job than you are an idiot. a job is just a means to an end. go out do your job collect your paycheck and turn it off. plain and simple. we get paid way to much, get to many perks, have to much freedom to take this job for granted. what would you rather be doing?? digging ditches or doing construction? wow I feel so good about myself because I paved the highway. fuck that. accept a job for what it is, a job. what other job can you make 100k a year, free car, not have an office, see your boss once a month, and really just drive around and bullshit with people? no where. if you are lucky enough to have this job than you should enjoy it and understand it for what it is. WHITE MANS WELFARE!

Nobody going to be making 100k soon, as they will be downsized for a rep that will do it for 50k.

A job doesn't define you, of course. Agree there.

but, you are taking the easy way out and playing the game like a high school cheerleader hooking up with the gym coach.

there is no integrity in pharmaceuticals. that is my problem. And money isn't everything, mr. boat man and mr. porsche man.

At first glance, you post seems to make sense. But, the further you go into it and the more you think about the actual job, the more your post reflects a person who is just to lazy to find a real job or career.

Have fun on your next downsizing, and have fun getting no respect from anyone, and have fun being Willy Loman for the rest of your life. Your kids, Biff and whatever the other kids name was, are going to be so proud of their pharmaceutical sales daddy who fakes his way through the day so their family can have a home that is too big and a nice car to drive to the senior prom.

The job has NO value besides a paycheck. Move on. Some of us are trying to do other things that bring value, some of us just don't care, some are waiting and hopeful to retire. A smart person would work on another "job" or further their education and always have something to fall back to when the Sht hits the fan in a few more years.

a job is a job. all industries downsize. very few jobs garner any real respect anyway. at the end of the day the only thing that matters is the paycheck you bring home and what you do with it. the idea is work to live, not live to work. is it really faking your way through the day if you are doing a task and getting paid for it? I don't think so. I wouldn't be mad at the individual who is doing what is asked of them and getting paid for it. As I said before if you honestly feel empty and horrible because your a pharma rep than you have bigger problems than where you are in life job wise. Most people would kill for the opportunity to get paid what we get paid and have all the perks. and to be honest who outside of pharma sales and the sales industry especially know what we do?? Not many. I know we all know what this job and industry are, but 99% of the world doesn't know or care. So all I am saying is if you are looking for real satisfaction and respect from your job go join the marines or cure cancer. the majority of people working hate their jobs no matter what. accept it for what it is and enjoy it.

The shit has already hit the fan.

on the value part, well you are right for the most part. However, some jobs give you some respect and dignity (teaching, nursing, pastor), while pharma sales just sucks the life out of people. It has sucked the life out of me, and I am ready to move on.

We get no respect. Not from management. Not from doctors. Not from staff. Not from the outside world. It sucks.

Perhaps you are not intelligent, and it doesn't bother you. But, for others that can think on their feet and are smart, they can't take it anymore.

Money is important, but quality of life and self respect are far more important.

Oh, no. It bothers me a great deal. I am not going into detail about my life but when you face death and then some, when you're old, some things become less important and you learn to accept the limitations of what IS. I work on other areas of my life such as the spiritual side. This job is about paying the bills. That is all it is to me. I do my best. I don't worry too much about getting fired or let go. If it happens, so be it. I hope by then to have other funds or skills in place.

I think for the under 40 crowd, this biz has got to be tough to stomach. You are young enough to still dream of changing the world and old enough to know that some people chose careers with a great deal more meaning.

as long as you realize that this job is just that... a job, you are fine. when you take a step back and think about what we do and what we are paid (for now) we have it pretty good. our job isn't stressful, we don't sit in an office cube all day, we aren't doing manual labor, we are not in any physical danger. the worst part about our job is how uneventful and vanilla it really is. we go around spewing clinical corporate crap to people who really don't care that much, but know samples and coupons help their patients so they put up with us. its all a game.

most people don't do anything remotely noteworthy with their jobs or come anywhere close to changing the world. you need to look at the quality of life for what you get paid. if you want to change the world join the marines or run for politics. I just want to get paid nice, save money and not die of a massive heart attack brought on by a stressful crazy job when im 48.

I don't feel pharmaceutical sales reps are dummies. They have to sell products that sometimes seem ridiculous because they are a me too of an already existing product, and there is no evidence their product is better than alternative, much cheaper generic agents. But the marketing and the money and Big Pharma's propaganda machine dictate the sales and the pharmaceutical reps are the instruments. Successful reps have to be politically savvy, charming, and have to know how to sell a product like a used care sales person or great snake oil salesperson. And sometimes they have to have even greater charm and acumen to sell their products. I don't believe drug reps are stupid, even though I am their antagonist many times. I feel that antagonists such as myself, could learn from them, and then we would be much more effective antagonists and advocates for our interests. And you can well guess what is my profession.

Pharmaceutical Sales is a joke. I did it for five grueling years, i won presidents club 4 times, made the company trip every year, and the JOB was the most humiliating pride swallowing fiasco of my working career. It was fine when I was fresh out of college and thinking I was on the fast track to an exciting career. But I realized real fast that I had made a mistake and the industry was a joke. I was embarrassed to tell people what i did and when I got married I swore to myself I wouldn't have my kids having to tell people their father was a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep. For those of you who say a job is a job and pharmaceutical sales is a good job, you are all lemmings. How can you look at yourself in the mirror and throw away your pride, dignity, and leave the financial welfare of your family to twist in the wind of pharmaceutical sales job. what happens when the gravy train ends, and it will. Look around, they hire young and get rid of the "older reps", reps in their mid 30's and up are on borrowed time. Actually you are exactly the kind of people I like to hire for my companies, I never have to worry about employees with this mindset leaving because i know they don't have the balls or fortitude to try. They're easy to please and just looking for a paycheck.

Sadly, Doctor (which is my guess), the PROFESSION of pharmaceutical sales rep became the slop it was about 20 years ago when the MARKETERS took over the business, started DTC advertising, got into the "POD" mode and DISRESPECTING the time and education of its target audience, THE PHYSICIAN.

Your older colleagues can tell of when the "detail man" was someone who RESPECTED their time, RESPECTED that they were guests in your office, and RESPECTED the hard work you did to become a physician.

And now, the drug industry has sold out to Dear Leader and will be the next turncoat to be demonized after making its payoffs to Dear Leader (after Wall Street and the Jewish-Democrats). Couldn't happen to a more deserving group of weasels.

Actually, life is in ideal harmony when your career is also your calling. Pharmaceutical sales can not provide that. Period. It is a degrading job that steals your values, integrity and respect. Fortunately for me, I was blessed to find a career where the end result is truely life changing for my clients. I am well respected and I have my dignity. Do I make a 6 figure income? No, not far from it, but I don't need to either. I paid off everything I own when I was in pharma. Life is wonderful on the otherside. I will pray that one day you find this too.

You think a doctor dug up a year-old thread

Well put. This was my first job out of college, over 10 years ago, and I knew 6 months into it, that it was a flipping joke.

Ten years later, I choose to get out.

I am still young enough to start over, thank you.

For those of you over 40 and still in pharma, you have issues, issues with money as your God or you probably don't read books without pictures.

Either way, if you are over 40 and in pharma, you are a loser.

I've got an idea, why don't you blow me unemployed punk without any money.
