Would you encourage a friend to go into pharmaceutical sales?
With the current state of the industry, instability, layoffs, etc.

My son asked me this the other day and I told him that by the time he is ready to go, this gig will not exist even close to its present form. If I can get seven more years (to age 55) with my current company, I'll be happy. Everything after that is gravy.

What do you think has been the cause of the decline of the industry?

If I considered the person a friend and wanted to keep their friendship I would definitely NOT encourage them to go into pharma sales. If it was just some joe schmoe I could get a referral fee off of, or course it's a great job!

You geniuses kill me. So what other job would you recommend that has no chance of job loss, pays this well and has less requirements to get into?

I'd love to hear this one. Since this topic comes up every other week here on CP and gets slammed back into their faces, maybe you'll come up with a new one...??????

I'm waiting.........with open ears again and again and again.......

"no chance of job loss".......pppplllleeeaaassseee! You are a dip shit partner.

You don't read well, do you. The PP was asking for a job with no chance of a job loss, since posters here comment about pharma layoffs and the industry changing.

So, obviously a better job would have no layoff chances. The only I know of are govt., but those jobs pay shit.

Do you have an answer, partner? I thought not.

What do you think has been the cause of the decline of the industry?

We grew too quickly on a suspect business model, that basically stated that the more reps the better. Who cares if they know anything. I think that this industry will be cut in half the next five years. I would hate to be in my early 30's with about ten years in and have to start all over in another career. But in that may come new opportunities. We do need to be much smaller and start to get people who are allowed to think strategically, rather than just implementing what marketing sends down from on high.

Doctors are no longer the major decision makers. We have been slow to realize that.

Yup, this is the best job out there, pound for pound.

I think the docs are addicted to our over-sampling them for the last 5 years or so. My worry is that they turn us all into part-timers and expect the same amount of calls to sample like we do now.

People like this guy make me sick. These kind of people are what ruined this industry. Do you ever think that some people don't get into pharma sales strictly for a good paycheck? Some people might take pride in what they do by servicing other people, travelling and helping patients lead better lives.

This industry has become the most laughable and unrespected job out there. Those of you that think otherwise are just kidding yourselves by telling yourself it's a great job with great pay so you can justify to yourself your "overpaid paperboy" job. It's a job pure and simple, not a career. You are micromanaged to the hilt, given no responsibility what so ever and not respected by the doctors or patients you pretend to want to serve.

Go out and try to find a real job that actually has some "grown up" responsiblity and you will be laughed at. People in other industries know how juvenile this industry is and understand that the people in the industry are just here to earn a good paycheck without having to use any adult job skills. The problem is you have no job skills that translate into a better job. You know that and it is killing you inside. You know you will never be able to land a respectable job because you spent way too long milking this proverbial cash cow. And trust me I know, I've been there.

You need to take a good look at yourself then ask " What satisfaction do I actually get from this job?" If your answer is all about money, then you've got a long tough road ahead of you in life. What is your future? I'm betting your answer will be as immature as your previous posts.

Take a good look at yourself and ask those questions. We know you are a miserable person but trust me, there are jobs out that do pay just as well. The longer you spend not being honest with yourself, the less chance you have of finding one.

Cry me a river. Nobody asked you about why this job has been "ruined". I hear your kind of whining here on CP every other post for the last 5 years I've been here. If any one is miserable, it's you, projecting your inadequacies unto happy me.

You make me sick. You think you are saving the world in this job? You're a fucking pill pusher!!! The benefits of this job are what YOU make of it. How dare you judge me!!!!

If you want to save the world, go start your own business, or work for a charity. I want to push pills, make bank, and possibly help people. How dare you judge me!!!!!!!

You know nothing about me, and I'll bet my next 10 years' of big micromanaged paychecks that I've got more "experience" and education than you. So, keep your stupid opinions and judgments to yourself. Or be a man and whine to your CEO and make a difference in your "career".

Instead, like a typical loud mouthed pussy, you whine here and try to make people who work for a living feel inadequate because their career doesn't rise up to the godly idealic level of your dreams. FUCK YOU!!!!! Go start a fucking church or something!!! How do I feel about it, huh?

Sorry dude. 10 year vet here. Gotta agree with the post you just slammed. Don't think he was judging you, just pointing out the truth. The industry has changed for the worse. That's a fact. If you are happy with your day to day pharma life-great. I say we've got problems. Yes, I stay for the pay. But still looking to get out for something more challenging.

You do need to chill a bit. These are the Cafe Pharma Boards. People come to post their opinions. So you can't say "nobody asked your opinion" because basically nobody asked your opinion either.

Anyone with a brain or an ounce of ambition would be bored to death with pharma after 6-12 months. There is no real challenge. If it is about making the easiest money around, I'd say go for it. I wouldn't plan on it lasting for long though. I see really severe cutbacks in the numbers of reps within 5 years.

Mother Fucking right I would. My company pays 1,000 dollar referral!

I think in BS's case, the question would be, "Would you encourage a person whom have no value to you other than to use and abuse?"

Boogalou, you actually have to have at least 1 friend to answer this poll. You are hereby disqualified from participating in the discussion further.

If you like spending all of your time catering brkfts, lunches, afternoon snacks and dinner programs go for it and remember your sales pitches if you work for a micromanaged management structure will be prepared for you and if you do not mind working with your boss 2-3 times a month telling you that you forgot to use a proof source properly and your probes were not good enough and you did not say what you practiced for 2-3 days at the last mtg. When I started in the pharm bus serveral years ago companies seemed to be more interested in results - now results are important but so much time is spent what to say and when and if you do not follow the strict guidelines with your manager you are in trouble even if you have the results. Last year I was ranked in the top 5% nationally but my manager still gave me a average rating because he felt my selling skills were not in line with what the company wanted because I did not always use the every proof source and sales aid on every call even standups.. Sometimes I wish my company would use a 100% commission pay plan so you could actually sell. I have only a couple of years left but the business has really changed for the negative.
