Middle aged man carrying Olive Garden, in a suit...

The embarrassing part is not ONLY luncheons. It's the WHOLE job itself. It's a mindless job for recent college grads, you're disrespected as hell, the things you do everyday/all day are useless and dumb, your own company treats you like you're five, you are gaining no useful job skills, you WILL be cut and will have a hell of a time finding a new job (b/c you have no real job skills). I could go on and on and on.
Some people can and will do just about anything for money though, or just can't get away from their golden handcuffs.

great reply...and so true...Americans are conditioned to be so competitive, money driven and materialistic...

I too was like that clown that thought just because I was pulling home over 6 figures, that it was ok to be in that mind numbing job...(just waiting to get cut as you point out...)

now you could not pay me enough to be a drug rep again...the job is a joke, and if you stay in that "profession" for the money, you are a joke too...

hell, strippers and ho's make good money too...I guess drug reps are in that same class...

Bullshit. Name one other job where you can, as mentioned above, work 25 hours a week, earn six figures, never pay for gas or anything automotive, cell and internet reimbursed, travel expenses paid, access to rewards points thru Amex and X hotels without paying a dime, not be stuck in a fucking cubicle, see your boss maybe once to twice a month, have completely flexible hours (given a standard drive-time geography) AND have access to all the Ambien or Viagra samples you want....IN THIS ECONOMY.

Seriously. Ask a commercial real estate agent how those 60 hour weeks and weekends are workin out. Or the primary care doc barely clearing 100k and getting their ass handed to them by patients, insurance companies, lawyers, Obamacare, etc. Or how about the burned out device guy, humpin 60 hour weeks chasing cases and constantly slammed with unreachable quotas, coupled with a weak base salary and irregular bonus pay, it's a recipe for an inconsistent career.

Absolutely! I agree, let's talk about all the great six figure alternatives with kick ass benefits, expense acct, free car, etc, with no bs where you are valued and no "joke" and the the thought of those "rare" golden handcuffs" doesn't exist. Guessing that wouldn't be a very long thread.
Duh.

i know an insurance agent, works 20 hours a week, pulls down nearly 100 grand a year, office expenses, etc are paid by the company he works for, writes off car expense, matter of fact he was on vacation from november to jan, kind of sounds pretty good to me and he is in his 2nd year, he was layed off from pharma and in 09,

Oh Yeah! Recent college grads deserve so much more.
Yours is really a fucked up generation.

You need to admit to yourself that you FAILED at pharma sales and move on.

You have no idea about 'my generation", AND um, I recently left the f'd up pharma industry on my own to start my own business (no, not insurance). AND I will guarantee when I left, I was making a whole hell of a lot more than you are now...after more than 13 years in (one company), I was hardly a "failure" in pharma sales! ha.
Anybody who actually "fails" in pharma sales must really be a loser, b/c the job is child's play.
It's exactly like described. Mindless and designed for newbies who need their hand held.
Go strip, prostitute, or sell drugs. You'll probably make even more money and not have to work much. But I guess you like hanging out in a job that's going down the crapper and has zero job security, just waiting around until you get booted and then wondering what on earth you can do with all those useless pharma "skills". If you're even partially smart, you should be working on Plan B; how to secure your OWN future rather than relying on the dwindling pharma industry to take care of you and all your materialistic needs.
YOU should admit to YOURSELF that you're a failure BECAUSE you're still hanging around in pharma, with no other options. It's an embarrassing job. Sorry.
Oh, and I'm with the other (guy) in that you could literally not pay me enough to ever do the drug rep job again. Once you're out of it, you REALLY realize how dumb it is!

The only way to "fail" at pharma sales is to remain in pharma sales

No truer words have been written here! Get your two-three years experience (5 max) and then move on to greener pastures.

At this point you've been trained how to sell, you know how to manage a territory and have a lot of good contacts and relationships. Use that leverage to find the next thing.

Wow, come on. If you can even bring lunch for 30 percent of your offices at this point, you're lucky. 80 percent of my territory is no samples, no food, no programs, no cold calls - appointment only. Get real, who really cares if you have to bring in lunch. Want to feel better about it, put it on a small cart so that your hands are bascially free. I wear scrubs, carry a backpack and have a cart. No one including pts gives me a second look, a nasty look or anything bad. Grow up. It's food. No one thinks you're a caterer. Walk in with no pride and guess what? No one will have any respect for you.

Stop! Someone with insight and perspective on life and the daily grind that finds a solution to a challenge. If the world had more people like Gams, we would be a great nation once again.

Why the fuck do you wear scrubs? Are you going in to assist on a procedure? You look like a fucking tool in those scrubs while you deliver samples. If I were a doctor I would refuse to see you just based on the fact that you wear scrubs.

Exactly! I am 55 years old. Been in other industries. I've got no problem carrying Olive Garden. I work about 30 hours a week. Never use lame detail pieces unless my manager is with me. I am up front and frank with my docs. I just give them one or two reasons to rx my drugs. Make about $115k a year. Is it a lame, boring, mindless job? YES! The worst part is I feel like days go by without any impact. That's what bothers me the most.

Did the Pharma gig for 5 years, did pretty good, won the company trip every year, and made pretty good money. The last two years I began to have sleepless nights and panic attacks. My territory was doing well as always but I began to have a sinking feeling. People kept asking me how I continued to do so well and I would give this speech about calls and asking open ended questions, closing, quoting studies etc, but in all honesty I had know Idea. I knew nothing i did in the field had any real impact, and after a while I couldn't really figure out what the hell I was really doing anyways. The real fear came from realizing I was not growing or learning any new skills. I was trying to look 5-10 years down the road at my future and I was terrified. Nothing I was doing was increasing my value, my value was actually stagnate or diminishing every year.
That was three years ago. I was able to convince a ortho device company to hire me. My first year was grueling, Im commission only, and made 80k. Which wasn't much after deducting all the operating cost, gas, car, toll, parking, etc. after about 9mo. of slowly proving my knowledge, abilities, and building my reputation, Surgeons starting asking me to go over Xrays and MRI's with them and for my opinion on treatment recommendations for patients. Since then I realize that I am becoming an entity upon myself. My knowledge, relationships, and skill sets have increased my marketable skills and placed me in the position of actually being able to be a true consultant and problem solver. DOn't get me wrong, it's still a sales job but one I enjoy.

totally agree with the last statement - as hot female i often think i would get more respect from everyone as a stripper vs a drug rep/caterer.
