What does a Therapeutic Manager (TAM)

Hello,

I have some questions regarding Genentech as I explore roles in pharma. I am a recent graduate looking for jobs and Genentech is my dream company:

(1) What does the day to day of a TAM look like? Is it a strategic role or just purely sales?
(2) What is internal mobility like within Genentech? For example, can I go from commercial roles to finance roles?

First of all, Genentech is no longer a dream company, for those of us who left over the last 5-7 years, the best days of the company were up until 2017. Now, if you think you are what they want in 2025, a TAM is technically a sales schlep who no longer get paid a bonus based on sales but MBO’s.

If you’re a recent graduate then yes absolutely go for it. But it is not a good company for experienced professionals. I was a medical science liaison in Genentech and I left because the new field medical leadership is garbage. There is ZERO opportunities for developing into director roles unless you impress the right people on top. There is a lot of nepotism and politics.

Let’s be honest, this whole industry is a scam! It’s not just Genentech! Great pay, great benefits, but down deep we all know this is great job but zero job satisfaction. Sure we help some but mainly we are 10-2, Monday thru Thursday actors!
