The fall of Amgen


Please, keep telling yourself that those two or three visits between shopping, taking little Jimmy to karate and spa days drove the business. You can thank your MSLs, reimbursement team and account directors.
If it wasn’t for the SAMs having the conversations in the field about disease, efficacy, and how to ID patients. There wouldn’t be patients. When you say reimbursement team do you mean the PAL? Not all of them are good, when you say account directors do you mean ADSOC? As far as MSLs mine isn’t good and hasn’t been to any of my accounts in the year she’s worked here.
 


Culture of active and style over performance. Eventually we cycle to the point that we have to buy some nimble development team that actually designs and produces products that are needed and add value. We suck the life out of those teams, drive them off, and maximize the cash flow but at the end, we need to buy someone else simply because of our culture. All fluff. No production.

Amgen has literally the worst culture I have ever experienced in my corporate career. They are rude, smug, and think the only way is the Amgen way. Either get on board or you’re toast. It’s not safe to speak up or disagree in any way. If you do you will be targeted and dealt with. A culture of fear and bullying. Where bad managers and people are protected and promoted. It’s demoralizing.

Go back a few year. Belt to ass in 2014/2015 and Otezla took all our business. Fast forward. We buy them and then remove their senior leaders. We then implement a program where we criticize the things they did that worked and go full force implementing the Amgen/ZS primary care formula on them and every single middle manager who spoke up and questioned the lunacy was let go. We kept those that bent the knee.

Thank God that product is all profit, because we haven't grown it since. Sure, we hit the price and manage inventories, but share and volume have been stagnant since 2022.

We do it to everyone. It's going full bore right now with Horizon.

That Sunday dread! The pit in my stomach of having to go back to work tomorrow. Boring forced Monday conference call.
In the Dynasty, I have 3 calls this coming week. All could be done by email but we have to have one to "kick start" Q3, one to talk about data, and one to share best practices at the district level. Such a culture of fakery. Go be intentional! Go work with purpose!
 




Calls this week and next. Ugh Discussing numbers that make no sense. Possibly 50% of the “numbers” are not even captured. Same uninspiring calls
When will you people get it - we don't buy enough numbers to make any sense of performance so - you better win the "story" game. Tell a story about how good you are and how well you have done. That's what matters in dermatology. That's who gets promoted. Work all year to tell your story for QBRs and Calibration. That's it. Nothing else matters.

Tepezza has been a sinking ship for years. Amgen made a big mistake with the Horizon acquisition. Hopefully the promise they say in Uplizna’s MOA for a whole host of disease states will live up to expectations, cause it sure as shit ain’t Tepezza.

This. I have seen 8 openings in my area the last 7 months. Some of them have been the same position. The culture is gone. This is a stop over for people. The company talks about how much they value employees but it is laughable. They will throw you out with the trash. Ruined derm, Rheum, neurology, etc. But hey they are science based, haha

I’m pretty sure they are trying to get all the horizon people who are left to leave. You should have seen the emails I’m getting from my manager this week about calls, metrics, stretch goals, reach and frequency. It’s nuts. The culture here is one of fear and obedience. It’s not about helping the patient anymore. We can’t even see what date the patient start therapy anymore.
