Background check


I was recently offered a position with Allergan. I failed background check due to a DUI. The HR rep called me and stated that they would be sending me an "adverse action" paperwork packet that will allow me to appeal their decision. I spoke with the manager that hired me and informed him of the situation. I explained that the DUI was 5 years ago and I haven't had any type of charge since. Does an appeal usually work out in the potential employee's favor? Who's decision is the final hire? I was told by the manager who offered me the position that I should do whatever I can to appeal because he doesn't want to hire another candidate for the role.
Please help! Any advice is greatly appreciated as I'm extremely eager to work for this company.
