Do Not Work at Stryker

Facts--the Avg. rep. works hard and makes a resaonable living-$120-175K-as long as you don't sell trauma. They pay their own expenses and car--costs about $15K-$20K. Early mornings are a norm. The BIG money that you hear about is with the reps who cover paid consultants. Some reps have 5 or more surgeons on Stryker payroll as consultants and those reps can make over $500K easily. Not at all a level playing field. If you are blessed with a high volume consultant--gee many are--you win. High Tech Pharma you can earn $120-$150K without a beeper-reasonable hours and a car w expenses paid.
Ortho today is about the same pay as Tech Pharma without the beeper an long hours.
Unless you are paid to babysit consultants--then you make big $$$.

You dont know what you are talking about. Lots of reps make 200+ not just ortho reps, top 15% in most divsions make over 300+ some 4-500+. Go back to your 10-2 pharma job.

Lots of Ortho reps make $300-500 K. Sure but most have a high volume PAID consultant as well. How many make $200K or less without a consultant? Soon the DOJ will be back to address the paid consultants--again. This time they may demand "claw back" commissions from the reps too. Make sure the surgeons and fellows know that "lots" of reps make more than the doctors. Brilliant.

SYK - will treat you good while things are good and you are hitting your number. If you miss your number you are forgotten and they move on to the next rep. If you kiss the right ass you will not get fired for missing your number. They will suck as much out of you as they can. Your best bet is to work at SYK for 3 to 5 years hitting your number then leave for a better QOL company.

Whoever said Stryker reps make $200k is sniffing cement. At 150% PTQ and 125% PTQ I never made that much. I left Stryker a year ago to sell capital and made more at 60%. The guys who have been with Stryker for 10+ years and have a high volume (500 or more totals a year) doc, are making over $200k. That's not a great rep, that's a busy doc. Ask them what they made in 2005? More cases less money. There are almost 2000 reps, I was in the top 15% and was not making $200k. Ortho rep = pharma rep

The above poster is dead on. I also left not long ago for greener pastures (i.e. more money, expenses all paid for, better QOL). I was a top 20% rep that made $130 in my best year and was there 6 years. It's a great company, don't get me wrong, and i certainly miss the relationships I built over the years with the staff and surgeons, but Stryker is not all it's cracked up to be anymore. Personally, I think Ortho isn't what it's cracked up to be. Whether it's JNJ, Zimmer, Synthes or Stryker, all of you are taking a hit. The question we should all be asking ourselves is, where else can we go to make over $250k? It's few and far between if you ask me....

Currently a Stryker rep making really good money. I work my ass off but have plenty of time for my family and friends. If you dont like making money and working hard work for the government or materials managment at your local hospital. If you are not a pussy and know how to get shit done Stryker will treat you right and you will make a ton of money.

Check your egos and open your mind. It's hard to make that kind of coin with big ortho now. Smaller distributors with carrying smaller companies products calling on ortho and podiatry who develop relationships can make $200K - $300K. But like anything else it takes hard work, intellect and a certain likeability. Although likeability is optional. I've seen doctors use reps they don't necessarily like, but respect for their knowledge. Good luck to everyone in this business. It seems to be getting worse every year.

To the above poster. if you will give some honest advice.

i'm a young buck Mid twenties just starting off my sales career with stryker trauma in hopes of the promised land $150-200+ within a couple years. whether that will happen at stryker or somewhere else (i hear synthes reps do well), is this the road i want to go down in light of the current conditions of the industry?

is there any truth to docs having less use for reps? i don't want to kill and commit myself to hell if there is nothing on the other side, especially 5-10 years from now.

the hours are brutally tough and i'm up for it as long as i know it'll pay off.

any seasoned reps with some sound advice?

Don't apply at Stryker (the only ortho co on "The Most Admired to Work" for list) if: you don't like competition, are not willing to work at 100% commission and must be home for dinner every night. Again, please do not apply. Very simple.
