Essure: What do OBGYN's think of it?

I've been in women's health care specialty pharma for over 10 years and am tired of the detail and "please use my product" type detailing and am thinking about making a move into device or medical science liaison (MSL) where I'm actually educating the physician and they want to see you.

What do the OBGYN's think of Essure and is it selling and moving? Is Conceptus stock doing well? I just cashed in my matured stock options which gave me a really nice six figure check and would like to continue getting stock options if I move into device sales such as Essure.

I checked with my own GYN on Essure. His opinion was that it was too much trouble to use. Patients have to be on drug treatment for months before hand. Afterwards they still need to use birth control, followed by a nasty, painful HPG exam at three months post procedure. Reimbursement sucks, too. Not worth it.

Surely this was written as a joke or from someone who is clearly ignorant. I can't speak for the rest of the country as well, but Essure has taken off around here. Reimbursement is outstanding here---about $3000/procedure. I give my patients a Depo injection and a week or 2 later, do the procedure, and they're covered for the next few months. Where's the trouble?

Trouble is being delayed in the OR by 1 to 2 hours for any multitude of reasons, waiting for the hospital to bring a patient back, charging a patient $5000 to $8000 for a simple lap tubal when I can do it for 1/2 that. So your stupid friend can contine to do his/her lap tubals and claim their $300 and I'll do something less invasive, just as good for 10X that.

By the way, you couldn't even get the test right. It's an HSG exam not and HPG exam. You know squat about gyn.

I am sorry, this is CafePHARMA right?? This isn't WebMD asshole! And why in God's name is a "doctor" on CafePharma anyway? Don't you have surgeries to perform and lives to save? You have graced us with your presence highness and for this we thank you.

Now I can say that I have truly seen it all. Maybe I'll see you on WebMD or Wikipedia where you can teach us all some more shit you scumbag. You are a pathetic excuse for a doctor, if you really are one....

I believe the good doctor is right on this one---I think someone must of had a few too many cocktails when they wrote such a nasty response---you should really stick to the top shelf liquors they don't produce such negative responses. If Conceptus is impacting you with such negative angry responses I'd get out. There is life after Conceptus.

I agree with all that I've researched on it.

Clearly ignorant, yes, but why else ask your own GYN his opinion before having an interview with the company (or having the procedure yourself for that matter)? Obviously this is the interpretation this GYN had of the sales message from the Conceptus rep, correct or not. Interestingly, the candidate who was finally chosen for the position (obviously not me, being such an ingnoramous!) declined the offer and now the company has started all over again interviewing two months later. Recruiters called me again! Gee, such a great opportunity and product but the chosen first choice candidate turned it down.

it's unlikely a doc wrote this. they have little vested interest in the company or the device - at least not enough to write an emotional response like this. sounds more like a rep or manager.

Hello to all. I work in an OB/GYN office and help my boss with these ESSURE procedures a couple times per month or so. Our patients are not required to be on a long course of antibiotics - just a few days before the procedure. Yes, the patient is encouraged to use other forms of birth control until the follow up testing is performed to verify that "works" - almost anytime a patient starts a new form of birth control, back up is almost always encouraged. Anyway, this procedure is performed in our office and takes a very short amount of time. The procedure itself takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Of course, the patient is in our office a longer amount of time, with vitals, torodal injection (+time to set up), and prepping the patient.
I have not, however, been in the follow-up HSG procedure, but from what I am told by my boss (the doc), it is a painless, quick procedure as well. He leaves the office for 20 mins (including drive time) or so for these, so I believe him.
I have never (knock on wood) heard a patient complaint, and believe me, I would hear them if there were any. It seems to me that this form of permanent sterilization is a no-brainer - it's less invasive, outpatient, quick, less expensive, etc.
Again, I'm not a doctor. My experience with this product has been nothing but positive!

If you don't mind having metal in your uterus that may prevent you from having further procedures and care in the future, it's a great product. Also, it's no good when it migrates, expells or perfs. Definitely not the optimum product they claim it to be.

I don't know what obgyn's think, but I know it hurts. I was told to take ibuprofen and I could feel the dr putting the stints in. I laid there for 30 minutes after and when I went to make the HSG apt, I almost puked on the receptionist. I told the dr I didn't know if I was allergic to nickel, but I was told it was fine. I now have "that time of the month" for 8 to 20 days a month, I cannot lose any weight in my stomach area, constant pain in my back and arms (so bad in my arms I can barely move them sometimes), and almost no sex drive. I have three young children and have no doctors who will listen to me. Essure is the only thing that has changed in the past year.
