Fixed duration job postings?

I just noticed a bunch of new fixed duration job postings with Lilly in the diabetic area. I was hoping someone could explain these roles a bit more. It sounds as if it were a contract sales job, but is it under the Lilly name rather than Ventiv or Publicis? It says the jobs are estimated to be a 2 year deal. Does that mean you are safe for two years or could it be done in 2 months? Is there a chance these positions could give the inside track to another Lilly job?

Roche has 10x more job openings. If you want diabetic work, go to Novartis or Roche.

Have you taken a look out at the job market lately? This job is no longer sub-standard. It's the new norm. You voted for CHANGE.......here it is!

The change was merely a very light fine for felony marketing. The charges were downgraded to a misdemeanor to "protect the employees and stockholders" of Eli Lilly. Hey this company got an almost free ride.

If you want to see very costly mistakes, just look at the $6.5 billion IMCLONE purchase. How many six-figure salaries will need to be eliminated to pay for that?

These positions are for a drug with boehringer. They are basically reserving the right to fire you at a moments notice. Shows how much faith they have in the alliance.

I am seriously considering one of the FDE positions. Those with Lilly please offer your opinion on the likelyhood of these FDE positions rolling over to full employment with Lilly. I have been downsized once and do not want to experience it again. Your honest inpust would be greatly appreciated, I am sure there are others with the same concerns.

I was an FDE and there was never a chance of getting a real job. Ignore anyone who tells you otherwise. Of course there's a "chance". But that's really just a fantasy. Go elsewhere. If a company can't afford to hire you, you shouldn't waste your time there.

Haven't you heard about the thousands of people that Lilly has downsized already with another 2050+ this year? The only hiring going on is in Asia. An FDE MAY have a job in the US for 1-2 years.

The environment is VERY stressful. People are no longer valued at Lilly and are just treated like crap.

If you just want something until you find a better job, go for it. Better to look somewhere else.

To your earlier questions. 1) No one is "safe" however this is not the first FDE position as Lilly has been doing this since 2008. There have been no examples of a "sales force" being let going prior to the two year period (not saying it can't happen, but since '08..it hasn't'"

2) Usually if there is an FDE contract period ending and they are creating FDE jobs in another division, they will give those an opportunity to switch over prior to hiring someone from the outside.

3) I don't know all of the FDE's the company has hired but I personally know some that were able to transition to an FTE role. I also know others who landed in another role.

Poster #10 here. Thank you for honest opinion of the FDE position. I believe I will stay away.

Smart move. Lilly wants people applying for the FDE positions believing that there is a chance of being valued and hired and promoted. It's called a carrot. Hang it in front of people and then pay them less money and over work them so that they constantly have to prove that they are worthy of getting hired by Lilly. Don't believe anyone who says that there is even a light chance of getting hired. The Lilly FIPNET model is ALL about moving toward vendor provided "butt in the seat" resources and no longer having Lilly employees that they have to provide benefits or pay future pension. So, there is a chance that an FDE could be offered a job by a third party to do work for Lilly and other companies in the future. Which would be much better than working for Lilly.

Based on the head hunter calls that everyone is getting it looks like the other Pharma companies are also hiring. Any of them have to be better employers than Lilly.

Good Luck.

This poster is right on. EVERY job on Lilly now is FDE. This will be the likely scenario for most pharma companies as this industry tries to "right" itself in the coming years (which I on't think will happen b/c of the vast availability of generic medications). Like the poster mentioned: fewer benefits, NO pension to pay (you never reach "vested" status, which is usually at one's 5-year mark) and are subject to being canned at any point in time (2 months, 12 months or at month 23, just as you're getting comfortable in your new role). The whole FDE thing is very disheartening, but it's reality.

While I didn't get chosen for the FDE in my territory, I made it to final interview and was told they would pay a starting base of 95k (it was a specialty position). Lucky for me I wasn't chosen, as the DM is apparently the largest male organ to traverse the earth.

Do the FDE if you are desperate - but do it saying to yourself: "After 18 months, I will begin looking elsewhere for permanent employment." Work those (hopefully) two years as efficient and successful as you can but don't let it run your life. Work knowing that in 24 months this job will be nonexistent - and treat it how you will in the interim. Odds are you WON'T be rehired. They'll use you to pump up the drug... get the market share where it needs to be... then hand the drug over to an existing salesforce to carry in their bags... & let THEM grow or at least maintain the drug.

You've made the right decision. I wasted years in an FDE position. I should have been doing all of those things for a real employer. My career will never get that time back. Complete waste.

I agree. Lilly is just a place to pick up a check in between career moves. You wouldn't want to waste your best working years at Lilly.

mysteriosly it gets hearts and minds of publishers of working women as their coveted prize of 50 best place to work for working mothers. The word comes to mind is bribary. Second thought - collusion of interest.
