Generic Sevoflurane

Has the market changed much since Baxter's generic sevoflurane came to market? Is there any reason to use the branded drug anymore(efficacy,contracts, etc...)?

Not much impact since Abbott lowered price to match generic price...Sevo has lion's share of volatile inhalation agent market...Sevo kept deal with HCA which impacts over 100 hospitals nationwide

None that I have heard of. Really not a lot going on in the way of anesthesia except a new muscle relaxant which is 2-3 years away and a reversal for rocuronium.

I sold Diprivan back when AZ was still Zeneca. After the merger we added in a regional blocker. Do they even promote a line of anesthesia drugs anymore?

I do not believe so. The only drugs still actively promoted are Zemuron and Nimbex (although limited now), Anzemet but with generic Zofran I am sure those go away, and Precedex.

Abbott set to lay off balance of sales force by summer '07 as both Minrad and Hospira come out with generic sevoflurane. fyi.

Actually Abbott owns 93% of the sevoflurane market (Ultane) due to price
matching and they own the vaporizers already established within the hospitals. Of coarse Baxter is up to their usual, heavy-handed old tricks and
the threat of price increases of their inhalation. Ultane is slowly taking over
the inhalation agent market now that they are 30-50% less expensive to use.
Ultane hase roughly 75% of the fast-acting market and you won't hear too
much crowing out of Baxter's performance in 06'...

you don't keep around a sales force to sell a generic drug, even if you do have 90% of the market. it's all done with group contracts.

Word on the street is Abbott is shopping around sevo. In negot. to sell to Hospira, but vaporizer inventory is a sticking point for now. Sales down more than 30%. Good time to bail. Reps to be reassigned?

Sevo may buy Abbott one more year, but the wheels are falling off the bus. Hey, they had a good 10 year run. Reps rumored to be either spun off, or retrained to sell pills to community specialty physicians. Hospira a logical possibility, but depreciated capital may not look too good on the bottom line.

Did the above rumor actually occur? Is Abbott still committed to this market?

Some bullshit in the latest APSF letter about how the generic sevo is watered down and not tested with the vaporizers - patient injury can result.

Don't buy it. These are generic drugs and get whichever one is cheaper, or if you can milk the rep for some free tickets or dinners than pay a little more.

If all else fails than buy from the rep who has the biggest tits.
