In my opinion, the Lee critics have it wrong. Look at his long-term track record - that is were the measure of Lee's success lies. Sure, cutting edge innovation is cool and sexy, but not easily sold to global partners. "Good enough" is usually the outcome from negotiated solutions. For Lee to be successful as the technology leader in the organization, he needs to gauge risk vs. benefit at a much broader scale than most probably realize. Crafting solutions that are acceptable to all involved parties sometimes means you need to take the lowest common demoninator. Over the long haul, this is what drives successful global implementations.
If you take a closer look at the current suite of major solutions in place - SAP, SFA, etc., I think you'll find steady long-term success guided by Lee's low-key approach.
