No More Macs!

Some layoffs in IT this week are consistent with a new strategy to standardize on Windows on the desktop--seems like a good decision; Art's obsession with anything Apple was bordering on the insane!

It's definately very expensive to support Mac client systems. Sure, you don't have the issues with viruses... However, you still have the support calls, the oddball problems, and all the other crapp that comes with system management.

You also have to deal with all the web applications that don't support Safari. Or Firefox. And there are alot!

You're kidding right?! Mac infrastructure can be run by a couple guys with about 1/20th of licensing and support costs needed to support a Windows environment. There are more controls and management capabilities on the Mac-side of the house as well. If you don't know don't make up things! I bet an army supports the Windows infrastructure at Roche and Microsoft is reaping all the $$$$$$ benefits.

As far a support... "odd-ball problems and other crap..." Really??? Just cuz you don't want to learn something new or are just too dumb to - don't talk out of your ass. I see call support ticket stats regularly. Windows issues far exceed those of Macs.

Safari and IE should be standards for all web apps/sites. Vendors developing only toward one are blind and just plain lazy. Macs are taking over biatches!

Wow, wrong wrong wrong.

In any case, supporting one platform is cheaper than supporting 2. And you can't run a global science based company on Mac. Todd is gone, Mac is next.

As for virus issues, my home network is more secure than Genentech. If they put even modest security measures in place and enforced user discipline, virus problem disappears. But god forbid users can't bittorrent, stream media, and surf porn on their work computer right? A&E is going to get shown the door and Roche infrastructure will plug in. Count on it.

And very costly to maintain. Great for shareholder value that obsession with being the coolest kids on the block.
