Oops! They did it again!! Layoffs at Alcon!

I thought that it only happened in the spring?

Here at Alcon we are once again laying off the most critical people that we need to run our business. We have a great quarter and we repay the hard working people with a layoff.

Way to go Alcon!

"Laid off" translates to "fired".
Wow, that's blatant ignorance. No, it's not the same. Being fired is being walked out the door for doing something wrong. When you're fired, you don't get a severance package and you don't get unemployment benefits. Being laid off is a reduction to work force but you get the severance package and unemployment benefits.

Uh, tell that to the hundreds that were "laid off" at Lockheed Martin and Hewlett-Packard two years ago. No severance package or unemployment benefits. Ignorant you are, indeed.

This is a lie. Only the contractors didn't get employee benefits. The full time employees did.

Don't know about that, but I can verify that most of the people who were laid off at Alcon back in 2011 didn't get any benefits until a lawsuit was threatened. Also, there have been many in senior management who were fired but still got benefits along with a package. So I agree that getting laid off sounds better than being fired, but they both can mean the same thing, which is "don't let the door hit you on the way out."

By the way, the "laid off" employees in the first run back in 2011 WERE escorted off the Fort Worth campus by security and management personnel.
