Quit or wait to get fired?

My company is in bad shape and my DM is trying hard to make himself look good ny fulfilling the desire of the RM t o punish and fire as much as possible. I've been with my company for years with no issues whatsoever. I'm worried that if I get fired it will be difficult for me to get another job if a prospective employer calls and ask what the story is or if I'm "rehirable". If I quit/resign its different but then I dont get unemployment right? Help! Thanks.
 


Do not quit. You will not get unemployment and it will be even harder to address quiting in an interview. Your company cannot say why you are no longer with them. So, don't worry so much about being fired. Remember it is YOU that supplies the reference/contact information. Get your resume polished up and start networking on LinkedIN. Join a few of their groups. I have in the past out-survived a bad boss. You really never know. Also, once fired or at the time of the deed, do not agree or sign anything saying you agree with a BAD review. They could use that against you to prevent you from getting unemployment. Start copying and keeping all "good" reviews and printscreen rankings for your brag book and files. Email yourself on a private email account any correspondense that you believe supports your side of things just in case. Good luck.
 




Thanks. I have been looking and hopefully something comes to fruition. I have years of nothing but good reviews. Only lately under the reign of a lousy RM are DMs trying to put people on plans and fire them like crazy. My DM has a reputation of being super lazy and he decided he would try to nail me to make himself look good and not get fired. He can dream because when the 3rd round of layoffs happen, he will be gone. However, I did sign my last review which was bad. I did not know what else to do, thinking they might fire me on the spot. I am surely being wronged and there is not much I can do.

your story sounds similar to mine.
We had 2 big layoffs in less than a year, got new DM after the last one, this new DM starts getting pressure and putting it on us reps. DM puts us on "plans", DM ends up getting fired, but they still came after me. I was able to collect unemployment even though I was fired.

This is a terrible industry unless you find a company that treats you like a professional and trusts you and allows you to work without fear. Every pharma company I interviewed with afterward had the same shitty attitude towards their reps, so I'm no longer in Pharma, less money but better quality of life.

Sounds like you were work at my company! Any DMs who have balls either are let go or are being true because they know they are leaving/interview.

I hear multiple stories of those that left the industry and make less money but have better quality of life. My worry is that I have kids and my wife doesnt work. I may have to take a second job just to make ends meet. I'd never want to be a manager because I will not enforce some corporate bullshit to destroy people's lives even when they dont deserve it.
 


don't quit ... don't wait to get fired... get the mother of all buy outs and WAIT... your buy out will come... my lotto winning happened in Jan and I am still lovin life... best wishes!!

Another vote for get fired first. Do not quit w/o another job first. Just develop the attitude that you don't give a shit - pull it together for the ridealongs but other than that do the bare minimum. With all the layoffs you might get lucky.

What if you are being harrassed on the job and about to have a nervous breakdown?? Still don't quit?? I don't get this strategy...If any job was making me ill, I am not going to stick around for things to get worse...I am going to quit...

have some dignity for God's sake...Pharma sales isn't everything in life.

Yes, you still DON'T quit.

Show some courage.

If anything, take a leave of absence. Your doctor can write you a note, requesting time off.

PHARMA MANAGERS ARE WIMPS ANYWAY. I have been in this industry for over 10 years, and trust me, they are wimps. The minute you stand up to them, they back off.

And if they don't back off?

Well, then they better have a dam good reason to fire you!

Screw them. Be strong. And do your job, and you will be OK.

Do not quit. That's what they are hoping for.
You won't get unemployment or severance if you quit. I let them fire me, and got both.
Be smart.
If you want to make it known that being fired was actually in YOUR plan (and quitting when very obviously pressured to do so was NOT in your plan), then just wait until it happens and smile, tell the manager that was what you were hoping for. Say thanks and be on your way.
That's basically what I did. When I signed off on any paperwork for the firing/severance etc., I also wrote about the shit I dealt with being pressured to quit, and how my RD lied, etc etc.
All true, and I just wanted it in writing along with the other stuff. I never signed off on any bad reviews or emails etc. Nothing! I battled all the way to the end. Don't know if my notes were ever read by anyone or if it mattered, but the DM in question was eventually demoted back to a rep, and the RD ended up gone w/in 2 years (not by choice). Maybe their files were reviewed when employment decisions were being made?? Or maybe just simple karma.
Just do not give in and quit. And don't let it affect your health. Accept what is going to happen, do your job minimally, and wait for it. I, personally, was getting physically ill also, until I decided to let things roll, stopped caring, and made plans for my future beyond that job. Got my severance, unemployment, and moved on. YOU CAN STILL GET LET GO AND LET IT BE KNOWN THAT YOU WERE IN CONTROL OF YOUR SITUATION THE WHOLE TIME. INSTEAD OF FIGHTING A BOGUS PIP FOR A JOB THAT YOU HATED AND WAS A JOKE, TELL THEM WELL HEY, I WASN'T GOING TO JUST WALK AWAY WITHOUT THE EXTRA MONEY FOR ALL THE SHIT I PUT UP WITH. You are still in control. Good luck. You will be fine, and you'll feel SO much better!!
 


One trick ... and be aware of it when you're on the PIP (you know, where they really want to help you to stay with them ... right).

Some managers either are taught or learn on their own that they want to draw the rep into a confrontation, especially in a public place. Mine had me sitting on a bench in front of one of my hospitals, berating every step of my sales call, literally screaming and arguing in my face.

I responded, yes sir, no sir, I'll try to do better sir, etc. Never raised my voice or fought back. Because then, I expected he would fire me immediately for insubordination or some such thing.

I made a modest deal with HR and walked away. Since then, the company has lost significant business and cannot keep a rep in this territory.

Just smile along and say "thanks for the suggestions, I look forward to implementing your suggestions and moving this territory in the right direction"

I just can't believe what has happened to this once proud profession.

District managers today are just so focused on keeping the Regional happy, and could care less about crapping on their reps if that is what is suggested by the Regional.

Its a rigged game. Its an industry that is no longer good for ambitious people, but great for chicks with knockers and guys with tanned abs...

and you wonder why the doctors no longer respect the industry and the reps?

Isn't it a red flag to specify that you don't want a new employer to call an old employer as a reference? You're admitting to hiding something!
 


you are way over thinking this. spin it. has management changed, did the manager know you?my manager was let go and fell off the map, plus most manager wont give you a reference bc the compliance dept says they cant. you choose a reason. when all that fails have a friend back you up as a reference from the old company. i can tell you are still freshly terminated. move on and move fwd-many people land jobs after getting fired-it is not a death sentence and theirs no shame in it any more than their is in foreclosing anymore.
