Salary/comp

I know I’m asking for trouble by posting on here, but, every once in awhile you can get a few helpful answers. Applying for a SAM role (rheum). The recruiter said that I should be able to get $180k base and possibly more. I’ve seen other bases posted on here, but it seemed like they are higher for the other SAM BU’s. Is above $180k possible? Do other BUs typically make more? What’s the car allowance? Are you given RSUs annually and, if so, what is the average?

Yes, I understand that many on here will have plenty of negative things to say about the company. I understand that its a perform or get out company. Thanks in advance for any honest information.

You can definitely get 195k + on base. The question is more around your experience and if they really want you. The big bonus dollars are harder to come by and we recently switched to vials vs. dollars. Car allowance gets thrown into your check- after taxes its about $500 a month. You get unlimited gas. The ESP and RSU is good here but we won't be having the type of stock price growth that we had the last 5 years.

At the end of the day Horizon pays pretty well especially on the base for a non oncology job. Tough product and you will need to grind.

Thank you so very much!!! I really appreciate it! I know that people get criticized for asking that info on here, but it’s helpful to have some idea so that you don’t ask for less than you can get or for so much that you eliminate yourself.

My advice is know your worth and if you get eliminated because of that so be it.

accurate. the main thing is after the first 6 months you really have to grind. you will have to lean on your friends like never before, to the point of ruining relationships because of how the vial quota is set. Price increases only help Senior Leadership make their number. We are stuck growing vials.

I say not a place to make a career. More akin to Device Sales. I'm looking to get out.

I have plenty of friends who make huge dollars in device- definitely a decent career. If you can't stand a little heat then you should leave to a lesser paying company. Plenty of hiring but no way will you make anywhere close to what you are making here. With heat comes more pay. I'm here to get sweaty until I get even more wet somewhere else.

Thank you. What does “unlimited gas” mean?

I was the OP (didn’t ask about gas). I do have to say that the car situation is pretty lame. $600 after taxes wouldn’t be as bad if you got paid mileage vs gas card. Not that you make a ton off of mileage, but at least it’s something.

Thank you, OP. So what I’m hearing is the gas card can be used for work mileage…and is not to be used for personal mileage. I ask because I would be coming from a company that has a specific fleet vehicle but all mileage (pro and personal) is put on the company card. Thank you for any insights.

No. Some companies reimburse mileage vs a gas card which would be better because the cost for mileage - say 28 cents a mile - covers gas plus some of the wear on your car. Gas card only equals less money. This is the crappiest car situation that I’ve ever seen, especially if you have a big geography since your call will get a lot of west and tear and depreciation from all of the miles. If I have a large geo and you have a small one and we buy the same brand new car, yours is going to be worth a lot more than mine in few years.

Only someone financially ignorant would buy a new car. The car allowance and gas card isn't a bad deal at all. You get to pick what you want to drive and are in a better situation than at least 90% of americans.

Horizon pays some of the highest salaries, RSU and bonus in the entire industry. If you perform here you are easily in the top 5% of earners in the industry. We also have one of the top ESP plans in the industry (locked in for 2 years at a price). 401k is above average but far from the best. If you take a job based upon the car allowance then you aren't what we are looking for- check out Genentech they are offering only electric cars you can get the Tesla you desire.

Calm down. The car situation is just worth knowing when calculating total comp. It’s useful in negotiating sign on and salary. For the record, though, the car situation here is pretty bad in terms of comp compared to most other companies, including small biotechs, if you have a larger geography.
To the jack ass who commented about the stupidity of buying a new car, again, it’s about comparing what you get at one company vs another. With fleet cars, it’s a new car every 2-3 years and all maintenance and insurance covered. Quite a few mid-size biotechs provide some pretty nice vehicles and that’s part of the comp package.

haha we don't need more ignorant people working here. What division are you interviewing for? You seem like a better fit at Pfizer or Lilly.

So, understanding the full comp package to help negotiate salary/sign on makes one a better fit for big pharma? Well, at least you’ve proven the point that there are ignorant employees currently at the company…well, at least one.
